VESTAVIA AL- REVIEWING DOG ORDINANCES AFTER 2 PIT BULLS ATTACK

Wednesday,  July 8, 2009 - Todd Coffey and his 7 yr old son, Jaden, were walking their German Shepherd on a lease when 2 PIT BULLS  got out of a fence and attacked them.  A neighbor intervened and helped protect Jaden from the dogs, but Todd Coffey and their German Shepherd were injured.

The pit bulls were owned by 18 yr old Benjamin Hilley.  The dogs were impounded, but neighbors were concerned that Hilley might be allowed to bring his dogs back home. Neighbors circulated e-mails about the incident and appeared at the June 3 court case.  City Prosecutor, Michael Trucks, addressed residents in a conference room outside council chambers.  He told residents that he had advised Hilley and his Mother "to look into another breed of dog."

Residents also asked Mayor Alberto Zaragoza who was also at the meeting about a city wide ban on pit bulls.  The mayor said the city is reviewing all its ordinances and wants to put more teeth in codes that address the number of pets a resident can have as well as strengthen ordinances that address vicious animals.
