PRATTVILLE AL - 2 BOYS ATTACKED BY PIT BULL- BOTH HOSPITALIZED

Nov 24, 2007 - Two boys were injured Wednesday when a PIT BULL TERRIER attacked them behind a home in the neighborhood of Scenic Hills.  Prattville Police Chief Alfred Wadsworth said the boys, ages 11 and 14, were playing in a drainage ditch behind a home at 225 Denise Drive when the attack occurred.  The dog came out from under a fence and attacked them.  Both were hospitalized after the attack.  "The 14 yr old appeared to have more bites than the 11 yr old. They were transported to Baptist South by medics.  One got bit in the arm really deep.  The dog has since been transferred to a veterinarian's office where it is being held in quarantine.

The attack was not the first time officers and animal control personnel have been called to the Scenic Hills area.  "There have been complaints about dogs at large, running loose down there," said Wadsworth.  "I'm not sure about dog attacks."  Animal shelter staff said they had responded to a call of dog fighting in the area earlier in the week.

Wadsworth said officers were still attempting to locate the dog's owner Wednesday afternoon.  Charges could be filed in the case. "There's a city ordinance against dogs running at large, and there's also a state law about keeping a vicious animal," he said.  "Once he bites someone, he's considered vicious.  The owner of the dog could be facing criminal charges."  Wadsworth said he was not immediately aware of any prior incidents at the address or with the dog involved in Wednesday's attack, however.

Due to the attack occurring in the Elmore County portion of Prattville, Wadsworth said the Elmore County Health Department is involved in the investigation.

FREDERICKSBURG VA - PIT BULL RIPS OPEN 16 MO OLD TODDLER'S FACE - ALABAMA CONNECTION

May 22, 2008 - The Brady's moved to  King George Co VA about 4 years ago from Alabama. The brief but vicious attack took place last Wednesday in the trailer park in Fairview Beach King George Co Sheriff,  Moose Dobson said. "This was a dog that Jacob and all the other children had played around a million times,"  Jeannette Brady,  the toddler's mother said.  "I would never have expected the dog to react the way it did."

Jeannette Brady said she was outside with Jacob planting flowers last Wednesday when Jacob rounded a corner into the neighbor's yard.  The trailers are so close and she wasn't immediately concerned....only seconds passed as she went to get him.  She wasn't immediately concerned either when she saw he had been knocked to the ground by a neighbor's dog in those few seconds it took to catch him.  But what she saw as she lifted him up still has her badly shaken.....the PIT BULL had ripped open little Jacob Brady's face causing a wound that required reconstructive surgery and about 90 stitches to close.

King George Rescue Workers responded quickly and the child was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital.  He had extensive surgery and returned home after a few days in the hospital.  He may need more surgery.  Sheriff Dobson said the case is being reviewed by the Comonwealth's Attorney's office.  HE SAID THAT WHILE THERE ARE  ANIMAL BITES FROM TIME TO TIME  IN THE COUNTY,  JACOB'S WAS BY FAR THE WORST IN RECENT MEMORY.

COLBERT CO AL - 3 RURAL DOG ATTACKS WORRY AND ANGER RESIDENTS

Mar 22, 2010 - Bill Cabaniss was taking an early morning walk near his home in Aycock Heights in rural Colbert Co when he heard a noise behind him.  He turned to find 3 snarling dogs circling and lunging at him.  "I just kicked like a wild man,"  he said.  "I wasn't going to let them take me down."   He pulled out a can of pepper spray, but it had lost it's pressure.  One of the dogs put a bite on his right shin and he has gone through 18 rabies shots, with 3 more to go.  Cabaniss says his was the 3rd attack in less than  6 weeks in the neighborhood.  We've gotten  too civilized out here to allow packs of dogs to run loose.  There are up to 20 children riding their bikes through here.  A month earlier dogs came after his neighbor  Sam Hughes.  He described one of the dogs as PIT BULL/BOXER MIX.  Another man was attacked the same week.  "This happened not 100 yds from my house where my 3-yr old plays in the front yard," said Hughes.  Mothers who push children in strollers say they have had the dogs follow them.

The owner of the Pit Bull/Boxer mix that bit Cabaniss  was located and that dog was  quarantined.  Another dog  is described as a GERMAN SHEPHERD that apparently is a stray, and the other was a BLUE HEELER whose owner was also found.  Colbert Co Animal Control Association Director Tommy Morson  said there is no leash law outside of metropolitan areas and dogs can run free provided they don't create a nuisance. The owner of a trespassing animal could be cited by the sheriff's office.  Morson said his department couldn't detain animals in unincorporated Colbert Co for fear of a lawsuit, but citizens can detain animals on their property.  The association offers free, humane dog traps for homeowners dealing with dogs that are creating a nuisance.

SHEFFIELD AL - 3 PIT BULL ATTACKS RILE NEIGHBORS IN SHEFFIELD

July 21, 2009 -  Kenny Price, Colbert Co Animal Control Officer is investigating several attacks on small pets on Lakewood Dr.  Sheffield Police Officers  trailed the offending pit bulls to a residence,  and neighbors believe the bulldogs belong to a neighor who owns 6 dogs.  One families Chihuahua /Maltese mix was found hardly anything left of him,  Another neighbor's Jack Russell Terrier was mauled, and there was an attack about a year ago.  The pit bulls actually came up on a deck to get one of the pets!  One attack cost the family $750, another $315, and another $300.

Price said Sheffield passed a Vicious Dog Ordinance Monday that goes into effect within five days.  He said the City only allows 3 dogs at a residence and the owner of the 6 pit bulls does not have city license for them. The owner says his dogs have shock-collar fencing to prevent them from getting off property, but Price says that isn't always effective.  "The neighborhood is very upset about this situation ," Price said.

TYLER TX - -GREAT SIGN!!!! WARNING! PIT BULLS FROM ACROSS THE STREET ATTACKED MY DOG-GUARD YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR PETS FROM THIS MENACE!

(COMMENT: Gosh Darn !!!  I should have made my sign bigger !!!!!)

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A dog fight in Smith County last week, led one neighbor to make a large wooden warning sign and placed it in his front yard.

Rock Ward was on a walk with his dog, Wolfgang, when a pit bull came running towards him and attacked his dog. The owner of the pit bull, Collins Tully says his pit bulls, Trouble and Ripper, usually stay inside, except for this time. "They just happened to be in the yard with me all day long, and the dog did go down and fight the other dog, but dogs are dogs."

Ward still feels like it is important to warn the neighbors of the fight, to prevent from another one happening. He said, "It at least makes people aware, and that's why I put it out there, I just wanted to make everyone aware. I'm concerned about the children over here...they wait for the bus, and I'm concerned for them." Tully says his dog, Trouble, has been around kids since he was a puppy, and despite the name of his dog, he is not a menace. He said, "I wish, he didn't put the sign up, it's kind of a nuisance, but the dogs are not a menace he's a good dog."

Collins was given a warning by the Smith County sheriff's office. Any time his animals leave his property they must be on a leash...or he could face a fine

CHICKASAW Al - CITY IS CONSIDERING A PIT BULL BAN - EVERYBODY ALWAYS SAYS THEY'RE SUCH A "SWEET DOG" UNTIL THEY EAT THE BABY

Sept 8, 2010 - The City of Chickasaw Al, located just north of Mobile, is considering banning pit bulls, or a vicious dog ordinance.  Resident Barry Lamm says he thinks pit bulls are dangerous.  He's had a couple of close calls with pit bulls on his daily walk.  He would support a ban.  Lamm says, "Everybody always says they are such a sweet dog until they eat the baby."

Chickasaw Councilman Adam Bourne said, "My preference would be to focus on Pit Bulls because that happens to be the breed that causes a lot of problems.  Bourne introduced the ordinance. HE SAID, " IT WASN'T AN ATTACK THAT PROMPTED HIM;  IT WAS THE IDEA ON ONE HAPPENING.  YOU CONSTANTLY SEE STORIES ACROSS THE STATE OF SAD SITUATIONS WHERE MAYBE A CHILD IS INJURED OR KILLED, AND I'D LIKE TO DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO PREVENT THAT," BOURNE SAID. However, Bourne says he will likely have to reach a compromise and change the language to ban "vicious dogs".   Other parts of the proposed ordinance include a ban on tethering dogs and leaving them unattended and making  people pick up after their dogs leave a mess.

CALERA, SHELBY CO AL - A PIT BULL NAMED BELLA LANDS OWNER IN COURT

Aug 4 2010 - A 5 yr old  PIT BULL  named Bella was running loose and ran into a neighbor's garage and killed their pet cat right in front of them. She attacked the 2nd time when she got loose and charged at residents walking their dogs on a leash and bit one of them.  Bella's owner, Melanie Smith, is going to court and says she will reimburse  her neighbor's vet bills and for the cat that was killed and all fines.  But she says, "Bella is such a  "SWEET DOG".  I just don't want them to put her down."  She has sent Bella to stay with relatives in Louisiana.  Mayor Jon Graham is against a breed specific ordinance, but concerned residents want something done.  They did find out that Police Chief Sean Lemley has been working behind the scenes  for months to create a strong animal control ordinance enforced by a dedicated animal control officer.

ALABASTER, SHELBY CO AL - DOG ATTACK IN 2004 PROMPTED STATE REP. CAM WARD TO INTRODUCE DOG BILL

Dec 7, 2004 - State Rep.Cam Ward of Alabaster plans to introduce a Vicious Dog Attack Bill during the next regular legislative session.  "This bill came about as a result of recent dog attacks on people in Shelby Co," said Ward.  The most recent attack occurred when a pit bull attacked the young son of Southern Hills Christian Church Senior Minister, Chris Frank, in Alabaster.

According to Ward, under Alabama law there is no criminal penalty in a case like this.  The only punishment that the owner would suffer is a violation of a local leash ordinance.  "Under my bill, these attacks would be a criminal misdemeanor by the owner where the owner acted with reckless negligence with the pet,"  Ward said. He said an example of reckless negligence would be where the owner allows the dog to roam free and does not keep it on a leash.  The punishment under his bill would be a hefty fine and in extreme cases, could result in incarceration.   He also said that following conviction, the owner would be saddled with a criminal record.

Minister Chris Frank alleges that the Friday after Thanksgiving his 2 sons were out riding a bicycle and skating a block from their home when a large PIT BULL attacked his 10 yr old son, Mathieu,  who was skating.  The dog went for his son's face and got his lip.  His other son took his bicycle helmet and began swinging it at the dog and they managed to get away but he was bleeding profusely from the face and was bitten on the arm.  The owner of the pit bull lives in a town house near by without a fence and she did not have proof of inoculation -only the word of the person who sold the dog to her.  Even though a police report was filed, there were no charges that could be pressed. The only violation would be the leash law which carries a small fine.

Capt. Curtis Rigney of the Alabaster Police Department says there needs to be some accountability on the part of the dog owner.  He said, "We are excited about Ward's bill.  We need a law like this."  The owner of  the dog said she was having trouble keeping her dogs in and did not know they were out.  Minister Frank told her to destroy the dog that bit his son and pay the medical bills and he would not press the matter further.   At presstime, he had not heard from her.  The leash law fine in Alabaster is $25 plus $147 court cost for the first offense.

DECATUR AL - HOG-DOGGING RODEOS - ALABAMA HAD THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF KNOWN FIGHTING PENS IN 2005

WHO KNEW?!  IT'S AMAZING WHAT A PERSON CAN LEARN ABOUT THE STATE THEY LIVE IN.  WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS!

http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Get+a+life+little+doggy.-a0133014071

June 1, 2005 -A bill to ban hog-dog rodeos, where pit bulls or American bulldogs are encouraged to attack hogs or feral pigs, is being considered in Alabama.  "I can tell you I have never seen anything in my life as inhumane and disturbing as this practice," says Representative  Cam Ward, a cosponsor of the bill.  Alabama has the highest concentration of known fighting pens.  The so-called rodeos feature hogs,  usually with their tusks removed, released in a pen with the dogs who go after them, biting their ears and pulling them to the ground. The contest is timed and the dogs are sometimes suited in chests armor, but both the dogs and the hogs can receive major injuries.   The new law would allow charging anyone who promotes, hosts, watches, or who supplies breeds or trains the dogs with a maximum penalty of one year in prison.  A second offense would be a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years.  Louisiana recently banned hog-dog rodeos, as does Florida. Tennessee and South Carolina are considering bans.

http://blogs.kansascity.com/crime_ssscene/2006/04/no_more_hogdog_.html

Friday, Apr 14, 2006 - No more hog-dog fights in Alabama-Montgomery AL- Alabama joined Mississippi and Louisiana on Thursday in banning a backwoods fad that was growing in popularity along the Gulf Coast: trained dogs attacking penned wild hogs as spectators cheer the fastest dog.  The events, often called "hog-dog rodeos" involve putting a trained attack dog, usually a Pit Bull or American Bulldog in an enclosed ring with a wild hog that often has its tusks sawed off.

The dog chases down the hog and grabs its ear or another body part while spectators watch.  The events have been most prevalent in coastal regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, but they have been found throughout the South.  The South carolina-based International Catchdog Association says the events have been incorrectly portrayed by critics, and they are more like field trials  for the dogs.

BIRMINGHAM AL - TWO WOMEN TELL ABOUT THEIR PIT BULL ENCOUNTERS

April 13, 2010 - Barbara Hill's little dog, Toto, is recovering after being attacked by a stray PIT BULL.  She had let Toto out in her fenced back yard and she heard her barking.  She looked out to see a pit bull in her yard mauling Toto.  She got a shovel and beat and beat the pit bull but he would not let go.  The attack cost her hundreds in vet bills.  Another woman, Belinda White says she was almost attacked in her Fairfield neighborhood Sunday evening. She was in her yard and looked up to see a pit bull coming across  her  neighbors yard straight for her.  All she had in her hands was a wallet  and keys.  She ran and made it into her house before the dog could get to her. She called the police but knows that is not enough.  "These are vicious dogs and people need to be accountable for their dogs,"  she said.  Animal Control was able to pick up the pit bull that attacked Toto.

ATHENS AL - COUNCILMAN SEEKS STRICTER ORDINANCE ON DANGEROUS DOGS

Mar 13, 2008- Councilman Ronnie Marks says that some dog owners in his district are creating makeshift kennels for large, vicious breeds, by fencing in carports, which is not adequate. "I want to introduce an amendment to our ordinance at our next meeting saying that you cannot have a kennel inside an open carport.  In my district we have A ROTTWEILER AND 2 PIT BULLDOGS  penned on a carport.  They got out recently and just about ate up a little dog on a leash.  There was a huge vet bill."

Code Enforcement Officer Ron Ultz, who for many years served as Athens' animal control officer, says A lot of the city is concerned about this.  "There are a lot of pit breeds out there, a lot of dangerous dogs.  It seems these days a pit bulldog is the young people's weapon of choice. We've been lucky we haven't had a major incident.  When you have such an animal confined in just a carport or tied on a chain to a doghouse, that's just a plan for disaster.  Strengthening confinement laws is like preventative medicine.  It's better to do what we can before disaster than after.

ATHENS AL - DIRECTOR OF ANIMAL SHELTER SAID THE BULLDOG BROKE THROUGH THE METAL DIVIDER IN THE TRUCK AND KILLED ANOTHER DOG!

http://www.waaytv.com/news/local/story/Athens-Leaders-Want-to-Toughen-Up-Dangerous

#88, #89.-  2008 - Athens Al-Councilman Harold Wales said he is tired of vicious dogs terrorizing his community and he wants to put some teeth into the city's existing dog ordinance.  He said he's received multiple complaints from residents INCLUDING ONE WOMAN,  LULA BELLE GEORGE,  WHO WAS ATTACKED TWICE IN THE LAST SIX WEEKS BY A PIT BULL. Fines can be as little as $40 and the owner gets his dog back.  He states he will personally champion this cause and try to strengthen our vicious animal  laws to the point that if you have one of these animals THE PENALTY WILL BE SO GREAT THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO FIX IT WHERE AN ATTACK LIKE THAT COULD NOT HAPPEN.  Wales is looking at ordinances from other cities and states to find one that fits Athens but he said he wants it to be one of the toughest in the country.ANOTHER STORY ABOUT LULA BELLE GEORGE

#90.  Timberly Sands is the director of the animal shelter in Athens and says he gets 6-10 vicious dog prisoners a month. "We've got a lot of careless owners out there and they don't realize the potential of their dog and we tell them that dog shouldn't be around people and they say ---OH, IT'S SWEET, IT'S SWEET---but we deal with them here and they are not always sweet."  ONE DOG AT THE SHELTER WAS ANYTHING BUT SWEET-- ON THE WAY TO THE SHELTER THE BULLDOG BROKE THROUGH THE METAL DIVIDER IN THE TRUCK  AND KILLED ANOTHER DOG.  EMPLOYEES OPENED THE DOOR TO FIND A BLOODY MESS.  THEY BREAK CHAINS, THEY GO UNDER FENCES, OVER FENCES, THEY JUST SEEM TO FIND A WAY.  PEOPLE HAVE CONCRETED THE FENCE AND DONE EVERYTHING THEY KNOW TO DO AND THEIR DOGS ARE STILL GETTING OUT."

                            MY COMMENTS

MY FENCE LOOKS JUST LIKE THIS ONE. THERE ARE 4 PIT BULLS NEXT DOOR TO US.   THE OWNERS OF THESE PITS RENTED A HOME ON ANOTHER STREET BEFORE THEY MOVED HERE.  THE NEIGHBORS ON THAT STREET TOLD US, AMONG OTHER THINGS,  THAT THE BOARDS ON THEIR WOOD PRIVACY FENCE HAD BEEN GNAWED UP AND THE PIT BULL OWNERS WERE TOLD TO REPLACE  THE DAMAGED BOARDS BEFORE THEY MOVED OUT. THERE WAS A CHAIN LINK FENCE AROUND THEIR YARD TO KEEP THEM FROM GETTING TO THE WOOD FENCE - BUT THEY GOT TO IT ANYWAY!  WE ONLY ALLOW OUR 2 FAMILY PETS THAT ARE GETTING OLDER,  JUST AS WE ARE OLDER, TO GO  OUT IN OUR BACK YARD AND STAY JUST LONG ENOUGH TO USE THE BATHROOM. IN FACT, WE HAVE A BARRIER OF THE FLOWER POTS I ONCE PLANTED FLOWERS IN PLACED IN A STRAIGHT LINE FROM OUR HOUSE TO THE BACK FENCE BLOCKING OFF 1/3 OF OUR YARD NEXT TO THE FENCE WHERE THOSE 4 PIT BULLS ARE.   OUR DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GO WITHIN 30 FEET OF OUR FENCE . IF THEY DARE BARK OUT ONE TIME, WE RUN GET A "TREAT" TO GET THEM BACK IN --DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING TO SET THOSE PITS OFF!!!!  OUR FAMILY DOESN'T GET THE EXERCIZE  WE ONCE DID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO I GUESS WE NEED TO GO TAKE THAT CLASS THAT WAS IN A STORY IN THE PAPER SATURDAY MORNING, JAN 22  ON -DECATUR ANIMAL CONTROL IS GOING TO TEACH A CLASS ON HOW TO SPOT ANIMAL ABUSE AND INCLUDED IN IT IS "WHEN OBESITY BECOMES ABUSE."   THE CITIZENS OF DECATUR AL REALLY NEED THEIR TAX MONEY USED FOR LESSONS FROM ANIMAL CONTROL ON OBESE DOGS.  WE THOUGHT FROM THE STORY IN THE DECATUR DAILY LAST MONTH THAT ANIMAL CONTROL EMPLOYEES WERE WALKING AROUND IN THE DARK ---COULDN'T PAY THE LIGHT BILL ---NOW  THEY ARE GIVING CLASSES TO ONLY THOSE WHO SIGN UP, ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER, FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE DOG ABUSE.  HERE WE GO AGAIN ---IS IT JUST ME ---WHY DO I THINK THAT PEOPLE IN DECATUR AL ALREADY KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE ABUSED ANIMALS  AND ANOTHER STORY IN THE DECATUR DAILY  COULD REACH  THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AND INFORM THEM ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE ABUSED ANIMALS ........AND THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO USE TAX PAYERS MONEY FOR LIGHTS AND HEAT TO DO IT.  I'M JUST SAYING .........BESIDES, THERE ARE MANY REASONS ANY DOG IS OVERWEIGHT...ONE BEING THYROID PROBLEMS.......IS DECATUR ANIMAL CONTROL PRACTICING VETERINARY MEDICINE NOW?...MOST PEOPLE WHO OWN DOGS HAVE THEIR OWN VET AND THIS IS A PRIVATE, PERSONAL MATTER.....ON THE OTHER HAND,. WHAT IS A PUBLIC MATTER --- IS DANGEROUS/VICIOUS DOGS....THOSE DOGS THAT HAVE THE PROPENSITY TO EAT THROUGH WOOD FENCES AND METAL FENCES AND HARM CITIZENS OF DECATUR AL.

DECATUR AL-INVESTIGATION INTO POSSIBLE DOG FIGHTING -2 DOGS SEIZED -8 DOGS LEFT IN BACKYARD

(THIS ARTICLE FOUND IN THE ARCHIVES OF WAAY31TV, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT IN DECATUR DAILY YET...STILL LOOKING)

http://www.waaytv.com/news/local/story/2-pit-Bulls-Seized-From-Possible-dogfighting/C

2008 - Decatur Al - Investigators with the Morgan Co Drug Task Force and Decatur Animal Services only took 2 of the pit bulls in the backyard of the Southeast Decatur backyard, but at least 8 more remain.  The seizure was part of an ongoing investigation. A Decatur Animal Cruelty Investigator said there was poor shelter, no rabies tags, and some of the dogs were very aggressive.  The 2 dogs seized were malnourished and bear scars consistent with dogfighting. Also seized were items that resemble dogfighting training tools:  HEAVY CHAINS THAT ARE OFTEN HEAVIER THAN THE DOG ARE ATTACHED TO THE DOG AND A CABLE AND THE DOG MUST RUN BACK AND FORTH ON THE CABLE TO STRENGTHEN HIS FRONT LEGS NECK AND CHEST, AND   A DEVICE CALLED A "GENIE" USED TO STRENGTHEN THE PIT BULL'S JAW MUSCLES BY HAVING HIM HANG FROM A TREE WHILE BITING ON AN OBJECT.  Several other items were taken.  The 2 worse dogs were taken today pending other charges.  It could take up to a month before actual charges are filed against the owner who remains unidentified.

DECATUR AL-STOP THE THUGS CASH CROP- REGULATE BREEDING OF PIT BULLS- STOP DOG FIGHTING AND DOG BITES

http://www.change.org/petitions/view/regulate_the_breeding_of_pit_bulls_to_combat_dog_fighting_dog_bites

REGULATE THE BREEDING OF PIT BULLS TO COMBAT DOG FIGHTING AND DOG BITES:

(Targeting: The President of the United States, The U.S. Senate, and The U.S. House of Representatives)

PIT BULLS NEED TO BE REGULATED AND LICENSED. Dog fighters would care less about anti-dog fighting laws: Dog fighting rings oftentimes trade cocaine and illegal weapons, which are also illegal by the heaviest standards of criminal justice. Curtailing or heavily regulating the BREEDING of pit bulls is the most effective means to combat dog fighting for you are regulating their cash crop: The production of pit bulls is currently legal to breed as many as they like and they do. Though other dogs can be used in dog fighting, only pit bulls fight to the death, therefore are the dog of choice among dog fighters.

If a person wishes to breed pit bulls, they should be required to own a government issued license, renewed yearly, for registration and tracking purposes. Unauthorized breeding should be heavily fined and/or require jail time. Pit bulls need to be seen as they really are: A cash crop for thugs, gangs, and organized criminals. Otherwise, pit bulls should be sterilized, which in itself prevents dog bites.

Pit bulls are hard to conceal and people will tell on others who breed them--pitbull breeders will get caught simply by individuals who report animal nuisances or neighbors who simply tell. Many people feel very uneasy about a pit bull next to their property, especially if there are many of them, and, in fact, many insurance companies will NOT cover your home if you own a pit bull (based on their statistics that pit bulls are dangerous dogs via insurance claims of dog bites).

Dog fighters are getting more sophisticated as they are staging dog fights in moving vans and trucks, televising their fights for their private internet betting audiences.

You can make dog fighting a first degree felony - as illegal as illegal drug trafficking-the dog fighters and thugs STILL will do it. It's not the lack of enforcement-the dog fighters are getting more clever.

Thank you for your time and reading.

DECATUR AL - ANOTHER BRUTAL PIT BULL ATTACK KILLS DECATUR WOMAN'S BELOVED PET CAT!

Sept 14, 2008 - Sunday afternoon Karen Deamico saw 2 PIT BULLS  right outside her back door attacking her beloved cat.  She yelled at the dogs but they would not let her cat go, but when they finally let go they were actually coming after her!  She is afraid some child is going to get eaten up by these pit bulls because they are vicious.  The dogs didn't have collars on.  When police arrived, they ran off toward Summerville Road.  She does not know where they came from but is very afraid they will return.  A few other neighbors remember seeing the dogs before the attack and said they are suspicious that one of the dogs may have been used in fighting because it had marks on its face.

TUSCUMBIA AL - WOMAN ATTACKED AND MAULED BY 2 BOXER BULLDOGS WHILE WALKING HER PARENTS YORKIE "TRIXIE"

Sunday - Sept 9, 2008 - Melissa York was keeping her parents Yorkshire Terrier, Trixie, and decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood on Sunday morning.  She looked up and saw 2 dogs charging her. The 2 BOXER BULLDOGS  surrounded her and began biting her all over.  She grabbed Trixie and tried to climb a tree but that didn't work.  She ran over to the stoop of a house but the dogs were still able to  bite her all over.  "When they bit me, it felt like I was being stabbed," she said.  "They were going to kill me and I just kept screaming for somebody to help me."  A man and woman pulled up in a car and got out with baseball bats and got the dogs off of her.  Melissa has bruises, scratches, and the dogs even pulled out her hair during the attack and they bit a big chunk out of Trixie's side and the backs of her legs.  Melissa doesn't know if she will ever be able to walk down a street again  and she says those dogs are too aggressive for the neighborhood where small children and elderly people live and she wants them gone.  The owners are facing a city violation of failure to restrain their animals, but if another violent incident occurs, police say they could face criminal charges.

HOUSTON CO AL - SHERIFF'S DEPUTY SUFFERS MINOR INJURIES WHEN BITTEN BY 2 DOGS-A GERMAN SHEPHERD AND A MIXED BREED

Jan 4, 2011 -  A Houston Co Sheriff's Deputy suffered minor injuries Sunday after 2 dogs bit her as she responded to a burglar alarm at a residence.  Deputy Michele Dunham and Sgt. Brock Cody responded to a burglar alarm around noon in the Wicksburg community when 2 dogs, a German Shepherd and a mixed-breed came out of an open garage door and bit Dunham.  Cody fired his gun one time into the ground to scare the dogs away.  It was reported that only one of the bites punctured the skin.  She was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center for treatment and is expected to return to work Tuesday. The incident was a false alarm and there was no burglary.

RUSSELLVILLE AL - PIT BULL BREAKS THROUGH WOODEN FENCE AND KNOCKS WOMAN IN FISH POND!

Apr 29, 2009 - A Russellville Al woman who does not want to be identified was in her back yard near her pond feeding her fish when the PIT BULL  broke through the wooden fence and knocked her into her pond.  "We struggled and it grabbed a hold of my backside and I am  black and blue all over," she said.   Neighbors heard her screaming and ran over to help her fight the dog off. She says vicious dogs have been a problem in the area for years.   Dogs are just left out to roam and she is scared to death and worries about the safety of her son and other children.  She wants the city to crack down on the dog ordinance.

Russellville Woman Attacked by Pit Bull

Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett says that they've had more than normal dog complaints come in the last few weeks and it's a growing concern.  He says the City Attorney is in the process of writing a new ordinance.  We've got sample ordinances from other cities trying to see what they have done.  Then we are going to try to make ours as stiff as theirs.  Under the current ordinance, there has to be a vicious act before the compliance officer can cite the owner and require the dog to be secured.

HUNTSVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES A NEW DANGEROUS DOG ORDINANCE

I found this information in an article on the archives of WAAY31TV.  It has no date but is probably about 2008.  It serves as further knowledge on what other cities in Alabama are doing to keep citizens safe.  HOWEVER, THE VICIOUS DOG/PIT BULL STILL GETS THE FIRST BITE FREE!  IT WOULD HAVE TO ATTACK SOMEONES BELOVED PET, CHILD, GRANDPARENTS, IN ORDER TO EVEN HAVE THESE RESTRICTIONS PLACED ON IT!

The Huntsville City Council approved with a unanimous vote a new dangerous dog ordinance after recent attacks by pit bulls on citizens. With this new city ordinance if you or a domestic animal is bitten by a dog, there will be an investigation and the case will go before a city judge who will decide what happens to the dog.  The worst case scenario would be that the dog would be euthanized.

Huntsville Animal Services Director Karen Hill Sheppard said there are less drastic actions that could be taken as well.  "The dog would be neutered and only be able to be walked by  the adults that live at that property.  It would have to be muzzled when it's walked also.  Most importantly there would have to be an enclosure built inside of the yard that met specific requirements.  The dog would be registered and if they move we have to know the movement of the dog."

HUNTSVILLE AL - TWO MORE RESIDENTS TELL ABOUT THE PIT BULL ATTACKS ON THEM

Chris Misterka was violently attacked by 2 PIT BULLS  on Armand Dr in Southeast Huntsville.  He has a rare condition called Reitger's Syndrome  and is legally blind and slow to react to any fast moving object.  He says,  "I didn't have time to react...the first dog grabbed my leg and ripped me to the ground and the other lunged at my throat but I was able to stop it with my hand before it got my throat ....and it grabbed my arm....as you can see...the whole time I was screaming for help."

His mother Bridgett Barber got a call after the attack and she is furious and says neither police or Huntsville Animal Services have done anything to the dog or to the owner!  The owner will not even come to the door for police or for anyone.

Another Huntsville Resident in this same story, Tom Johns,  says he was attacked last summer and says if something isn't done, he is moving for his family's sake.  "I hate to say someone can run you out of your house....but that's what's going on...there's no law in place...that can protect us from it...it can happen over and over and over again...obviously!"  he said.

These residents say they are pushing to get stricter dog bite laws in place.  For Bridgette Barber and her son, Chris Misterka, they say they don't want anyone to have to go through what their family has gone through.  She adds, "one attack should've been enough.  There has been  too many already!"  They are going to do everything they can to get it changed.    Huntsville Animal Services said they don't have the legal authority to take these dogs or anyone else's ...and that dogs are considered property.  However, Animal Services Officials have been working for the past five years to get a city ordinance in place where they could take an animal if they deem it vicious or under the care of an irresponsible owner.

HUNTSVILLE AL -2006 - ROTTWEILER ATTACKS WOMAN - SEVERE INJURIES TO ARM

Feb 8 2006 - 41 yr old Tina Campbell was in her back yard feeding her dogs  when her neighbor's ROTTWEILER  attacked her.

After several minutes of the attack, the owner of the dog was able to pull her inside her home to safety.  Family members say the same dog attacked their pit bull in the same yard 3 weeks ago.  They got rid of their pit bull, but the neighbor did not get rid of the Rottweiler.

Tina Campbell has severe injuries to her left arm, legs and buttocks area.  Doctors aren't sure she will ever be able to use her left arm again. She lost muscle from her left shoulder to her left elbow.  Campbell says one of the worst things was that her granddaughter watched the whole attack.

It is reported that the neighbor will have the Rottweiler put down.

HUNTSVILLE AL - A 61-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WAS ATTACKED BY 2 PIT BULLS IN HER OWN BACKYARD - "ARM LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN THROUGH A MEAT GRINDER" - HER GRANDSON WAS ATTACKED BY SAME DOGS!

SUNDAY,  JULY 29, 2007  -  HUNTSVILLE AL - CAROL HOLLAND, A 61 YR OLD GRANDMOTHER REMAINS HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING ATTACKED BY NEIGHBORS 2  PIT BULLS.  SHE WAS TAKING HER DOGS OUT FOR FRESH AIR IN HER BACKYARD SUNDAY WHEN SHE FOUND HERSELF FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE. THE NEIGHBOR'S DOGS DUG UNDER THE FENCE AND SHE WAS LEFT WITH MORE THAN 20 WOUNDS TO HER RIGHT ARM AND HAND AND POSSIBLE NERVE DAMAGE.

HER DAUGHTER SAID, "IT WAS PRETTY BAD.  FOR A LACK OF A BETTER TERM IT LOOKED LIKE HER ARM HAD BEEN THROUGH A MEAT GRINDER."  HER OWN SON, BO, CARROL HOLLAND'S GRANDSON, WAS ALSO ATTACKED BY ONE OF THE DOGS IN THE PAST.  NOTHING WAS DONE AFTER THAT ATTACK.  THE DOGS WERE QUARANTINED FOR 10 DAYS AND RETURNED BACK TO THE NEIGHBORS.  "THERE ARE LAWS IN PLACE TO PROTECT THE DOGS," HER DAUGHTER SAID, "BUT THERE ARE NO LAWS TO PROTECT THE VICTIMS."

DR. KAREN HILL SHEPARD WITH HUNTSVILLE ANIMAL SERVICES SAYS DOGS WHO BITE ARE PUT INTO QUARANTINE BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF RABIES NOT BECAUSE IT IS A BITER.  THERE IS NO LAW IN ALABAMA THAT AFTER THE DOG HAS BITTEN IT HAS TO BE DESTROYED OR THAT THE ANIMAL BECOMES SOMEONE ELSE'S PROPERTY.

CAROL HOLLAND'S SON IS LAYING CONCRETE IN THE HOLE UNDER A FENCE MADE BY THE ATTACKING DOGS WITH HIS .22 CALIBER GUN AT ARM'S LENGTH BECAUSE THE PIT BULLS ARE STILL IN THE NEIGHBOR'S BACK YARD. ONE TV STATION KNOCKED ON THE DOOR AND TALKED WITH THE NEIGHBOR WHO SAID THE DOGS BELONGED TO HER BROTHER AND SHE WAS ALSO VERY AFRAID OF THEM.  SHE WAS VERY APOLOGETIC TO CAROL HOLLAND FOR THE ATTACK.

IN A LATER UPDATE - THE 2 PIT BULLS ARE OUT OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD PERMANENTLY...THE DOG OWNER CALLED THE TV STATION TO TELL THEM THE DOGS HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED FOR THE SAFETY OF HER OWN 2 CHILDREN!!!!!!

THE VICTIM COULD NOT FILE CHARGES AND THE CITY COULD NOT TAKE THE DOGS .....BUT THAT COULD CHANGE WITH THE STATE LEGISLATURE'S PROPOSED DANGEROUS DOG BILL. THE BILL ESTABLISHES DUE PROCESS IN WHICH A DOG IS DECLARED DANGEROUS.  AND THE OWNER COULD BE CHARGED WITH A CLASS "C' FELONY IF THEIR DOG ATTACKS UNPROVOKED.  THE WRITER OF THIS ARTICLE STATES THE BILL HAS FAILED TWICE SO FAR IN SESSION.

GURLEY AL- PASSES NEW ANIMAL ORDINANCE IN 2005 - "WE CAN SLEEP WELL KNOWING WE HAVE TAKEN A PROACTIVE STAND"

Mayor Stan Simpson says, "We can sleep well at night as councilmen and women, knowing we've taken a proactive stand to make the community safer." Simpson says he's not prohibiting people from owning these animals, but preventing a tragic occurrence.

The mayor calls Gurley a bedroom community - an image he's trying to maintain - a town with a lot of kids and people out and about.  Residents have raised concern about vicious dogs in town limits.  He says, "the restraint process for vicious dogs, which is a rope or chain, isn't adequate enough to protect public interest."  So the city adopted an ordinance that requires confinement for vicious animals.

A vicious animal is defined as:

*Any dog with a known tendency to attack unprovoked
*Any animal, because of its size that's capable of inflicting serious physical harm
*Any dog that has attacked before
*Any dog owned for the purpose of dog fighting
*And any pit bull terrier or any mixed pit bull breed

Jan 18, 2008 - Mobile Al - 4 yr old Bryant Gross got into an argument with his brother and the FAMILY'S PIT BULL  jumped on him and attacked him. A woman driving down the street saw what was happening and heard the mother scream for help:

"The dog didn't want the mother,"  she said.  "He wanted the child.  She was holding her hand out and everything, and he wasn't trying to take her hand at all.  He kept trying to get in between her arms and take the baby.  He just bit his ear up  on the side of his face and really hurt him."

The child is in fair condition with injuries to his face and head.

PIT BULL/VICIOUS DOG ATTACKS - A CLUSTER OF ATTACKS IN THE CAROLINAS-THAT INCLUDES 3 DEATHS -1 HORSE DEATH-AND WORSE ATTACK ON A CHILD EVER IN THE AREA!

Each day I take time to search for dog attacks in my state of Alabama.  I type in first - dog attacks alabama- looking for any new or old bites or maulings by any breed of dog.   Rarely does anything appear.....then I change my search to :  Pit bull attacks .....Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Dothan, Gadsden,  Florence, Decatur, etc..... and the information doesn't stop...it keeps coming from every state in the union, europe, and all over the world.  Sometimes there appears to be a cluster of attacks in one area and this seems to have happened in  the Carolinas recently with a death and with what police called THE WORST MAULING OF A CHILD EVER IN THAT AREA!

1.  Dec. 5, 2010  - Wilmington NC - A 68-year-old woman was killed and seriously injured her grandchild in a bazaar vehicle accident.  A PIT BULL HAD BITTEN THE 1-YEAR-OLD GRANDCHILD'S FACE...and the grandmother was rushing the child to the hospital and was blowing her horn when she entered an intersection on a red light.  She collided with another car and then she struck a utility pole.

2 . Dec. 24, 2010 - A 6 yr old boy, Jakob Clark, was critically injured in Mint Hill near Charlotte NC and his Grandmother was also seriously injured by a relative's pit bull. Police called it one of the worst dog atacks ever!!! The last words the kindergartener said before he went into shock was, "I don't like that dog!" Two weeks later he has undergone his 8th surgery. ONE OF HIS EYES IS IN BAD SHAPE, HIS FACE IS SCARRED AND HIS RIGHT ARM IS MANGLED!...HE MAY NEVER BE ABLE TO USE HIS ARM AGAIN! His Grandmother is out of the hospital and is having to recover in a rehabilitation center.

3. Jan. 7, 2011 - Davidson Co NC - Sherri Herald and her daughters thought they were doing a good thing - they love animals - they rescued 4 pit bulls from a pound to keep them from being put down. However, she also owns horses!!!! She took her girls to school Thursday morning and returned home to find the 4 pit bulls eating one of her horses alive---2 hanging from its mouth one on one side and one on the other, and 2 biting its ankles. At one point a dog fell off the mouth and started running at Sherri, then it turned and went back to the horse. Animal control came and fired a shot of warning but the dogs swarmed the officer from different directions causing him to shoot and kill them. The animal control officer said they wouldn't listen..they were already in their pack.... their zone. SHE NOW THINKS PIT BULLS CAN BE MORE AGGRESSISVE THAN SHE EVER KNEW. THE HORSE DIED. "THAT COULD HAVE BEEN MY CHILDREN INSTEAD OF THAT HORSE.," she said.

GADSDEN AL - LAWS AGAINST DANGEROUS/VICIOUS DOGS TO BE ENFORCED AFTER PIT BULL ATTACK ON 8 YR OLD BOY

Sept 28, 2011 - I found the original article in the Gadsden Times through Google Newspapers Archives with a great picture of Jonte Bishop.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=t14vAAAAIBAJ&sjid=U9wFAAAAIBAJpg=3282,761233&dq=pit+bull+attacks+birmingham&hl=en

The incident occurred on Feb. 3, 2005 - Jonte Bishop, 8, and his brother, LaMonte, were playing on their porch and the neighbor's dog jumped their fence and came up on the porch.  Upon seeing the aggressive behavior of the dog, Jonte pushed his brother inside the house to save him from being attacked.  Unfortunately, Jonte was unable to get inside in time before the dog attacked him.

His mother, Karen Bishop, said her son was treated at a Birmingham Hospital and had 29 stitches on his forehead and near his eye.  He will likely need cosmetic surgery to reconstruct his face.

GADSDEN AL - A STANDUP CITY!!!!!!PROACTIVE IN LOOKING OUT FOR THE WELFARE OF ITS CITIZENS!!!

Feb. 25, 2005 - The Gadsden Police Department, which oversees the city's animal control division, announced that the law will now be enforced.  Sgt. Lonnie Russell, who oversees the city's animal control division, says he needs the help of residents - "One of the problems we're having is we've got to know where these dogs are and we're asking for the public's help."

City officials already were looking into more enforcement, but a recent attack on an 8 yr old child, Jonte Bishop, has prompted the dept. to take a proactive approach toward enforcing the city ordinance concerning vicious dogs.  Sgt. Chris Haney, a juvenile detective investigating the Feb. 5 dog attack of Jonte Bishop said it was discovered that children were playing near a fence and the pit bull jumped over the fence to go after the child.  "IT'S OUR DUTY TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS, ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN.  THE CHILD IN THIS INCIDENT DID NOT RECEIVE ANY FATAL INJURIES, TO WHICH WE ARE VERY THANKFUL.  WE ARE AWARE THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE!"

Residents are asked to report vicious dogs by providing a name of the owner and the address of where the dog is located. The law requires a dog defined as vicious be confined indoors or confined in a securely enclosed and locked pen or structure with secure sides and top attached to the sides.  The dog can not go off property unless it is caged or muzzled and on a lease.  Warning signs must be displayed in a prominent place on the property and $100,000 liability insurance taken out on the dog.

DEFINITION OF A VICIOUS DOG:

*Any dog with a known  propensity, tendency or disposition to attack unprovoked or to cause injury to or otherwise threaten the safety of human beings  or domestic animals.

*Any dog which because of its size, physical nature or vicious propensity is capable of inflicting serious physical harm or death to humans and which would constitute a danger to human life or property if it were not kept in the manner required.

*Any dog, which without provocation, attacks or bites or has attacked or bitten a human being or domestic animal.

*Any dog owned or harbored primarily or in part for the purpose of dog fighting or any dog trained for dog fighting.

*Any pit bull terrier, which shall be defined as any American Pit Bull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed of dog, or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding the breed of American Pit Bull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier.
