RUNYAN CANYON, LOS ANGELES CA - UNLEASHED PIT BULL ATTACKED DELILAH A BELOVED GOAT AND HER LEG HAD TO BE AMPUTATED !!!

Photo: DELILAH THE GOAT UPDATE: Delilah the Runyon Goat's caretakers would like to thank everyone for their concern and the "get well" cards kid's have left at her pen. We are happy to report that after she awoke from her operation, Delilah did as goat's do and ate the towel she was resting on! She is in excellent care at a local animal hospital. She will now begin therapy to learn how to function with three legs. In the not too distant future, she will welcome onlookers again at Runyon Canyon.

DOG OWNERS
It has been approximately two weeks since Delilah was attacked by an off-leash pit bull inside her pen near the Mulholland entrance of Runyon Canyon. Awareness of this incident has been important due to the fact that as this was an unprovoked event, this incident could have happened to a hiker, another dog, or child.

This is not the first attack by aggressive dogs on other dogs or hikers at Runyon Canyon this year. The vast majority of Runyon dog owners are responsible. We need your help educating and encouraging those that are not responsible to become more responsible.

With your help in proactively taking efforts to "know your dog" and encouraging others to abide by laws of the park, we hope this event will be the last. If you see a dog owner being irresponsible, please speak up and encourage them to follow the laws posted within the park.

As in the case with Delilah, dog owners will be held responsible for the actions of their pet. It is important that you "know" your pet before bringing it to Runyon Canyon. If you have a new dog or have just adopted a rescue animal, take time to learn the animal's temperament and establish a verbal command control relationship with the pet before introducing it to Runyon Canyon (and certainly before taking it off-leash).

The opening entrances (all three) to Runyon Canyon are NOT off leash and fines can exceed $180 which cannot be paid by mail (court date is required). If you are not sure which areas are on-leash vs. off-leash, ask other hikers for guidance (however signs are posted). If your dog is in any way aggressive or vicious, by law (LAMC 53.34) it may not be brought to Runyon Canyon (or any Los Angeles dog park). Additionally under LAMC 53.34, any dog that exhibits aggression in the park must be immediately removed from the park (you cannot continue on your hike). In the event of a dog bite or injury to a human or another animal, the owner of the offending dog must provide current tag information, name, and phone number to the victim (LAMC 53.29, 53.38). Bite victim's should report the incident and collected information to the central Ranger's station at (323) 644-6661, General Service Police at (213) 978-4670, and Animal Services at (888) 452-7381.

Please note the intent of this notice is to prevent any additional incidents. For Runyon Canyon to remain an off-leash dog park, these incidents cannot continue.

Photo: Delilah is recovering from her operation after being mauled by an off leash pitbull. Thanks for all the good wishes.

Delilah the goat awoke from her operation after being mauled by an off-leash  PIT BULL  and will now begin therapy to learn how to function with three legs.  In the not too distant future, she will welcome onlookers again at Runyon Canyon

TELFERNER TX - PIT BULL ATTACKS A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN - BITING HIM ON THE NECK 2 TIMES !!!

"NOT ONCE DID THE DOG GROWL.  EVEN WHEN IT HAD ME BY THE NECK !"

Paul Alderete, 20, was bitten by a   PIT BULL near Telferner Texas on Tuesday.  His parents had gone to see about buying a vehicle from a man and they encountered his 2 year old Pit Bull chained near the vehicle. They decided to purchase the vehicle and made arrangements to finalize the sale on Tuesday.

Their son, Paul Alderete, came this time to help.  This time the Pit Bull was loose and it ran up to Alderete's parents acting excited.  It then went to Paul who was walking behind and without warning jumped straight up to his face and neck.  and went straight for his throat and latched down.  No one realized  Paul was bitten until the Pit Bull was pulling himn to the ground and they turned and could see the blood coming out immediately.

Paul Alderete pried the dogs jaws off his neck, but it bit his neck the second time while he was on the ground.  He tried to prevent the dogs jaw from locking up with one hand and used the other to poke at his eyes until  the dog released its grip.  The dog's owner pulled it off and chained it up.  There was another white Pit Bull running  loose in the area that they had not seen the day before.

LAFAYETTE IN - 3 DOGS RUN LOOSE IN A NEIGHBORHOOD AND ONE OF THEM BITES A 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL THAT WAS SITTING ON HER PORCH - HER MOTHER IS UPSET ABOUT THE "ONE-BITE LAW"

Mother upset with Lafayette's response after dog attacks daughter, 9
Friday - May 25, 2012 - On  the third of May   3 DOGS (SEE THE VIDEO TO DETERMINE BREED OF ONE OF THE DOGS)   ran loose as Denise Loveless and her three daughters were riding their bikes in front of their house .The dogs chased her daughter Hannah and then one dog scooted under her fence and bit down on the leg of Josie, her 9-year-old, sitting on their porch.  Josie was pulled off the porch as the dog was shaking her  Then it bit her on her arm. She was taken to the emergency room.

"SHE IS SCARRED FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE,"  SAYS DENISE LOVELESS.   "SCARRED MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY."

Animal Control responded to the initial call and helped get the dogs back inside the fence, but nothing else had been done.  "It upsets me a lot.  I feel like something more should be done about the situation."

Lt. Brad Bishop with the Lafayette Police Department is also the Animal Control Director.  He says in general they could always improve and they could have communicated a little better in this case.  But it is up to the discretion of the animal control officers to issue a dangerous animal agreement with the owner.  The agreement makes the owner responsible for containing an animal that has bitten someone or making sure it's properly restrained if it's not in the owner's yard.  The ordinance is written with both dog owners and potential victims in mind.  To be considered as a dangerous dog, he or she must be out of its own property and not on a leash.  Bishop said most cases involve a bite to a human, but a vicious attack to another animal could also be considered.

Lt. Brad Bishop also said, "IF GIVES THE DOG ANOTHER CHANCE.  IT GIVES THE DOG OWNER ANOTHER CHANCE TO PROVE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE AND CAN TAKE CARE OF THAT DOG AND MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN."

After Channel 18 got involved and contacted police late Tuesday, Animal Control came out to the owner on Wednesday, May 23, and issued a "dangerous dog agreement" with the owner.  So if the dog bites somebody else, it can be seized by the city. Bishop said in the Lovelace case, the gate had been left open accidentally.

***********************************************************************

BUT DENISE LOVELESS SAID THE "ONE-BITE LAW " SHOULD NOT APPLY IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES......

"WHAT OTHER NEIGHBOR NEEDS TO BE TORN APART TO JUST GIVE THE DOG A SECOND CHANCE"

************************************************************************

She would like to see the dog that attacked Josie put to sleep.  In addition, she thinks the other dogs need to be muzzled and under adult supervision when they are outside.  She also wishes city code would require a taller fence, too.

Dog Survives Vicious Attack In East Windsor

Wednesday - May 23, 2012 -  7-year-old LUCY was attacked Thursday as she was being walked by her foster parent.

"LUCY IS SUCH A POLITE BEAGLE AND SHE WAS JUST MINDING HER OWN BUSINESS," said her foster parent Craig Desjardins, who has been fostering Lucy for 3 weeks.   Lucy was 2 days away from being  euthanized at a pound  because her elderly owner could not care for her anymore, when  John Dunn who rescues dogs saved her.

"IF YOU MEET HER, YOU WILL KNOW WHY.  SHE ALWAYS HAS A SMILE ON HER FACE .IF I COULD TAKE HER, I WOULD. BUT I ALREADY HAVE 2 DOGS."

The attack was unprovoked and the  UNLEASHED AMERICAN BULLDOG  flung her in the air and bit her twice on the back and once on the jugular vein. Lucy stopped breathing for over 2 minutes on the operating table at a local animal hospital,  If the jugular cut had been a little deeper, Lucy would not have made it

Desjardins said the Bulldog's owner apologized and offered to pay the vet bills, but his neighbour has ignored him since the incident. Dunn says that his small non-profit group is stuck with the $665 vet bill.

Local couple wants stricter laws after dog killed by pit bull

Wednesday - May 16, 2012 - A Nipomo couple is grieving the loss of their dog after it was killed by another dog at a Morro Bay RV park on Mother's Day.  Gary and Patty Roche were visiting friends at the Morro Dunes RV Park about 5 Sunday evening.  they put their 8 pound dog on a leash and put him down on his pillow.  A couple of minutes later the people staying next to them arrived and their  90 POUND PIT BULL  jumped out and attacked their dog.

"HE WAS RESTRAINED AND ASLEEP ON HIS BED WHEN THIS UNPROVOKED ATTACK HAPPENED.  HE NEVER SAW THE PIT BULL COMING. WE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR DOG.  THESE PEOPLE  WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE.

They want to make it a requirement for aggressive dogs to be muzzled in public.  They believe dog owners should take responsibility for their pets, regardless of the breed.  They want to push for a law they will call "COMET'S LAW".   For Gary Roche, Comet was more than just a dog.  Comet had been his mother's dog before she passed away. Roche says he hasn't been able to sleep well for the past  two nights because he keeps running that scene through his head of seeing his dog being ripped apart, and he wonders what else he could have done?

This PIT BULL has been put down according to Morro Bay Animal Control.

HOBBS NM - PIT BULL MIX ATTACKED A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH LEUKEMIA PLAYING ON HIS SKATEBOARD

Cancer patient attacked by pit-bull mix

CHRISTIAN DANIELS is a fighter.  He's battling leukemia and he recently fought back against a PIT BULL MIX  dog that could have cost him his life.  He was riding his skateboard last Monday a block away from his home when he heard a barking dog.  The barking got louder and louder, then the dog was jumping right at him. He began yelling and kicking but the Pit Bull Mix had him pinned.  It got him on the ground and bit his arm, shoulder, and hand.

The dog that attacked Christian is normally chained up in an unfenced yard.  It broke its chain to chase him down the street.  He could not use his left hand for 6 days.....but it was  THE BLEEDING THAT WORRIED HIM....."IF I BLEED TOO MUCH, I WILL BLEED TO DEATH,"  he says.  He is in his second year of chemotherapy treatments for Leukemia,   His mom also says that the chemo treatments reduces his immune system, so a dog bite could be deadly.

His mom says that Daniel never cried.  He just walked home and said, "Mom, look!"   And of top of everything, he had to endure a series of rabies shots because the dog didn't have a rabies certificate.

The dog is now in quarantine.

GEORGIA - ON MAY 3 GEORGIA GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNED INTO LAW THE "GEORGIA RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER ACT"

"IF WE HAVE SAVED ONE LIFE AS A RESULT OF THIS LAW, THEN OUR WORK WAS NOT IN VAIN,"  SAYS MADDOX.

The  "GEORGIA RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER ACT"  was the signature piece of legislation for retiring State Representative GENE MADDOX.  The Georgia legislator's efforts were spurred by the death of 5-year-old  CHEYENNE PEPPERS  who was killed by the family's 3 Pit Bulls in her backyard in Thomasville Ga in 2009.

Officials say the new law addresses deficits in Georgia's antiquated Dangerous Dog laws.  The law holds owners of dogs responsible for the actions of theirs or kills a human, and in some cases,  a judge can order euthanasia for a VICIOUS dog. Under the new Georgia Law, a VICIOUS dog must be microchipped, cannot be sold or transferred unlessd it is to be relinquished to a government facility or a vet to be euthanized.

Owners of VICIOUS DOGS maintain $50,000 dollars of liability insurance, and no person may own more than one VICIOUS DOG. The law further stipulates that a person convicted of certain felonies are prohibited from owning vicious dogs.

MADDOX points out that you must be 18 years or older  to own a classified dog and only one per domicile is permitted.  Owners of classified dogs must notify animal control and register within 10 days of becoming a resident.

A dog owner could face at least a year in prison and at least a $5,000 fine if the dog injures someone on a second occasion.

LILBURN, GWINNETT COUNTY GA - A PIT BULL CASE AGAINST DOG OWNERS AND LANDLORDS IS HEADED TO TRIAL AND MAY IMPACT ALL OF GEORGIA CASE LAW

In this video and article two children tell about the worst day of their young  lives 15 months ago when a neighbor's  PIT BULL  bit them in the front yard of their duplex apartment in Lilburn.

The boy, Ernesto Gurrola Jr, who was 4 years old at the time, had been playing outside with other children and he had gone inside to get a drink of water from his mother. When he walked back out he said he saw the dog and raised his arm up over his face and the dog bit his arm.  His sister Yaine, who was 9, tried to help him.  The dog went running at her and then bit her.  Their mother said through an interpreter, that she opened the door and saw the dog holding Ernesto by his shoulder and armpit and it was tossing him from side to side.

The parents and their children have sued not only the dog's owners, who lived in the other side of the duplex

************************************************************************

THEY HAVE ALSO SUED THE LANDLORDS !!!

************************************************************************

Last week Gwinnett County State Court Judge John Doran rejected a motion from the landlords' attorney to throw out the lawsuit against the landlords. Judge Doran ruled that the parents' lawsuit should go to a trial jury.

The owners of the Pit Bull, who now live in Atlanta, are representing themselves in the lawsuit and say in court documents that the 2 Gurrola children "provoked" the "always calm" dog into biting them and they claim the children were not badly injured.

The landlords claim they did not know about the dog living with their tenants.  But the parents said they repeatedly complained to the landlords about the dog that bit their children............

*************************************************************************

AS WELL AS THE OTHER PIT BULL THAT THE NEIGHBORS OWNED.

*************************************************************************

Another neighbor said she and others had also complained about the 2 dogs and that she even helped the SPANISH SPEAKING MOM CALL GWINNETT COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL TO COMPLAIN.

One of the famly's attorneys, R. KEEGAN  FEDERAL JR states:

"THE LAND LORDS, HERE, DO HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY IN ADDITION TO THE OWNERS OF THE DOGS THEMSELVES.  THE LANDLORDS LEASES WITH THEIR TENANTS SPECIFIED THAT DOGS WERE NOT ALLOWED, YET THE LANDLORDS DID NOT ENFORCE THAT.  THESE PEOPLE ARE TENANTS WHO ARE PAYING RENT, IN FULL AND ON TIME AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY MONTH.  THE LANDLORDS ARE BENEFITING FINANCIALLY FROM THESE PEOPLE LIVING THERE, AND THEY HAVE A DUTY TO BE SURE THAT  'COMMON AREAS'  THAT ARE BEING USED BY THEIR TENANTS ARE IN FACT SAFE FOR THEIR USE.  AND  'SAFE FOR THEIR USE' CAN INCLUDE NOT ONLY BEING SURE THAT THERE ARE NO POTHOLES THAT THEY MIGHT STEP INTO AND BREAK AN ANKLE, BUT ALSO THAT OTHER TENANTS DO NOT HARBOR, KEEP, OWN, MAINTAIN VICIOUS ANIMALS ON THE PROPERTY WHO ARE GOING TO ATTACK THE OTHER TENANTS."

The Gurrolas decided  not to pursue filing criminal charges against the landlords and the dog owners  partly because they said they did not trust authorities to prosecute the case since, they said....

**ANIMAL CONTROL FAILED TO HELP THEM PREVENT THE INCIDENT.**
