VENTNOR, MARGATE NJ - SHORE NEWS TODAY - LETTER TO THE EDITOR - "AGGRESSIVE PIT BULL BEHAVIOR HAS BECOME SO COMMONPLACE THAT IT'S NO LONGER 'NEWS' "

TO THE EDITOR:

Violent, aggressive  PIT BULL behavior barely gets a passing mention.  It has become so commonplace that it's no longer "NEWS."  Such was the recent unleashed Pit Bull charge at a Ventnor Police Officer and a neighbor.  The officer was forced to draw and discharge his firearm.

The decision to use potentially deadly force is never made lightly.  In the back of any officer's mind is the certain knowledge that the decision will be scrutinized and second guessed by supervisors.  He also knows that a bullet's trajectory won't necessarily follow a straight line.  At worst, it can ricochet backwards and strike the officer or bystander.

The entire snafu could have been prevented by one simple measure:  mandate by ordinance a $5 cloth jaw strap for all dogs over 25 pounds.  It does not impede drinking or eating by the dog, but it does stop biting and mauling by large, aggressive dogs.

This time it was an armed officer, but what if it had been a defenseless 3 or 4-year-old playing outside?

NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA - LETTER TO THE EDITOR DESCRIBING A 40-MINUTE STRUGGLE WITH A PIT BULL IN A BACKYARD INVASION

"IT SEEMS UNLIKELY THAT IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS ARE SUDDENLY GOING TO BECOME RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF INCREASED FINES."

July 21, 2012 - Letter to the Editor in Response to an Editorial:  City Push for Responsible Dog Ownership needed

I have been following the many recent articles in the paper regarding vicious dog attacks on pets in Nanaimo.  I would like to share with your readers our experience this past spring which was not reported in the newspaper where an unleashed pit bull attacked and killed our cat in our Nanaimo backyard in the presence of a number of adults.

The pit bull entered our backyard through a gap under a gate, pursued our cat and then clamped down on its chest.  I picked up a rock and hit the pit bull and then straddled the animal and started punching it as hard as I could to the head.

This had no effect on it.  There was no way to restrain the dog as this pit bull was not wearing a collar.  I then used a wooden log to position the dog against a rock to protect myself.  This enabled me to start to choke it and compromise its breathing.

Another adult jumped in and grabbed the pit bull's ears to control his head.  My wife then pried the dog's jaws apart and removed our cat, but the cat was dead.  Some other adults arrived to help and after a 40-minute struggle, the police arrived.

The police were unable to restrain the pit bull and ultimately an animal control officer attended and succeeded in controlling the dog.

The pit bull was extremely muscular and strong and did not retreat even after it suffered considerable pain.  It was determined by police that this dog was unlicensed and that the dog's owner lived in a house with many young tenants.

The heading in your editorial, "Real problem is irresponsible dog owners," is clearly demonstrated in this incident.  In our view, the laws are inadequate in controlling who can own a dangerous dog.

Moreover, it seems unlikely that irresponsible dog owners are suddenly going to become responsible because of the threat of increased fines. What are the mayor and Nanaimo city council going to do to protect innocent citizens and their pets against irresponsible dog owners and their dangerous dogs? Based on our experience and the other reported incidents in your newspaper this year about pit bull attacks, these dogs and their irresponsible owners are a clear threat to public safety.

The city must take immediate steps to prevent future incidents of this nature.

Dr. Rob Piemontesi

CARY IL, MCHENRY COUNTY IL - NORTHWEST HERALD - LETTER TO THE EDITOR - PIT BULLS AT LARGE - "MY ELDERLY COLLIE WAS ATTACKED AND KILLED BY 2 PIT BULL/MASTIFF MIXES"

"INSTEAD OF IT BEING A CRIME SCENE, LAW ENFORCEMENT CONSIDERED THE MAULING OF MY COLLIE AND HER UNTIMELY DEATH NOTHING MORE THAN "DOGS AT LARGE" AND A "PETTY OFFENSE".  THIS IS LIKE SOMEONE RUNNING MY DOG AND I DOWN WITH THEIR CAR ON THE SIDEWALK AND GETTING A TICKET FOR AN ILLEGAL LANE CHANGE."

Saturday - July 21, 2012

To the Editor:

An editorial is in order regarding this ongoing reporting about pit bulls. In March, two pit bull-mastiff mix dogs made an unprovoked attack on my elderly collie on my property. I was helpless, and there was nothing I could do with this beast’s head down in my collie and literally shaking her to death.

Like handguns, the pit bull family is a weapon. A handgun can be quite an impressive piece of art at home, and a pit bull can be a great family pet. When you fire a handgun in the air, you are to blame for the damage the bullet inflicts. Unfortunately, our laws don’t seem to cover that same responsibility when a pit bull escapes.

Instead of it being a crime scene, law enforcement considered the mauling of my collie and her untimely death nothing more than “dogs at large” and a “petty offense.” This is like someone running my dog and I down with their car on the sidewalk and getting a ticket for an illegal lane change.

Whether it is a handgun or a pit bull mix, both are weapons that can inflict damage and death when not properly secured. I don’t mind people owning these dogs, or rescuing these dogs, but these dogs need special treatment as a weapon, and the laws must hold owners accountable.

If property is damaged or if a person is hurt, the owner of the dog(s) must be responsible for more than just a ticket for “dog at large.”

GERONIMO OK - A VICIOUS ATTACK BY A PIT BULL MAY CAUSE A WOMAN TO LOSE HER LEG

A woman was walking up to a friend's house when a loose PIT BULL ran up to her and bit her between her leg and her groin area. The muscle and tissue were ripped off and the wound, which is now infected, is the size of a cantaloupe. Her sister says that she could not believe her eyes when she went to the emergency room to see about her.  The doctors told her that if it had been a child, it would have killed it.  It was within centimeters of her main artery and she could have bled to death.  As it is, the woman has diabetes, making the healing process even slower.

In spite of all this, the dog has not even been taken away and the woman's family is very angry.  They also heard that the dog had bitten someone before this attack.  Geronimo City Hall said the dog's owners were issued a citation on the day of the attack and it is still under investigation.

LEWISTON ID - PIT BULL COMES THROUGH FENCE AND ATTEMPTS TO ATTACK A MAN CUTTING WOOD - THE MAN FENDS OFF THE PIT WITH AN AX

Sunday - July 15, 2012 - Robert Clark was cutting logs for woodworking in his backyard in the 700 block of Warner Avenue shortly before noon when he saw the next-door neighbor's Pit Bull jump through the rail fence and start........

BITING AT HORSES IN THE PASTURE.

He yelled at the dog to stop, drawing its attention, which in turn led to the 6-foot-9-inch man having to choose a weapon to keep the dog at bay - a cell phone, an ax, or a chain saw.  The dog circled him, lunging at his legs and then jumping at his throat.  He held his cell phone in one hand and used his ax with short measured swings to keep the animal at bay....

"I JUST HELD MY GROUND.  BUT THE DOG BECAME MORE VIOLENT AND IT BECAME CLEAR THE PIT BULL WAS ENJOYING IT....IT WAS A GAME TO HIM."

An officer soon arrived and the dog charged at him and he fired first at about 20 feet with a shotgun.  They believed this shot missed the Pit and it ran across the street and was fired at the second time.  It ran into a nearby tool shed.

The owner, CRAIG PETTIT, 26, was called to bring the dog out of the shed and it was taken to a vet. and it will recover.  However, this was the 4th time Police have been called about Pettit's Pit . Robert Clark said one of those 4 times , it chased his wife onto their porch.  In canvassing the neighborhood most all of the neighbors indicatd that the dog is aggressive.  Pettit had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court after being cited on charges of having a dangerous dog on March 11.

SPARTANBURG SC - A PIT BULL ATTACKED AND FATALLY INJURED KIM BURCHFIELD'S BELOVED TERRIER MIX "TOTO" AND SHE ASKED FOR HELP IN GETTING RESTITUTION

Kim Burchfield is a big animal lover and has many dogs and cats.  But one of her beloved pets, TOTO, was attacked by a PIT BULL in her front yard six months ago.  She immediately called 911 and an officer with the City of Spartanburg Animal Services came out and took the Pit Bull.  Kim took Toto to a vet but a few days later she received more bad news that Toto would have to be put to sleep.

She was left with a large bill from the vet.totaling $700.  She was hoping the PIT BULL OWNER would be held responsible.  She waited a few months and then called animal services at the end of March and told them she had not heard anything from them and was wondering if they had forgotten about her case. She called several more times, then after 6 months, she called 7 ON YOUR SIDE for help.  They  contacted Spartanburg Animal Services and an officer was able to track down the Pit Bull's owner that same day.

Animal Control says they had the wrong name for the owner of the Pit Bull and the owner had eluded them for months.  The Pit Bull's owner, Makisha Burris,  is now headed for court on July 30th.  She could face a fine and/or jail time, if found guilty.  If convicted, the judge would then decide on whether or not to award restitution.

Makisha Burris never came to claim the Pit Bull, and it was put down.

TYLER TX - PIT BULL JUMPED A FENCE AND ATTACKED A WOMAN AND HER BELOVED YORKIE - IS THIS A VICIOUS DOG OR NOT???

Wednesday - July 11, 2012 - Sue Hearon, 61, was walking her beloved 10-year-old Yorkie  "CASSIE" about 7 pm on Sunday.  They had walked by a house on the corner many times and a dog would run up and down the fence line barking at them. This time the Pit Bull jumped the fence and charged at her and her little 9-pound Cassie.  The large dog hit them with such force it knocked her down and then it bit into Cassie.  She scooped her little pet into her arms and stomach in an effort to protect it.

"THAT IS WHEN THE PIT BULL GRABBED MY LEFT ARM AND BEGAN BITING ME OVER AND OVER."

The owner of the Pit Bull had been mowing his grass and he ran into the road and grabbed his dog off.  She was taken to a Clinic to be treated, and Cassie was taken to the family vet and treated for multiple bites including one in the hind quarter so serious a drainage tube has been left in the dog.  Ms. Hearon is very worried about the cost of the incident. But she is thankful because she knows....

"THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE, BECAUSE THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT DOG WAS NOT STOPPING.  I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SLEEP BECAUSE I KEEP DREAMING OF THE ATTACK.  IT'S SUCH A HORRIBLE THING TO GO THROUGH."

She always did it this way and she would stay on the front porch with Prescious.  But Tuesday she decided to hurriedly go to the bathroom first instead.  She then heard a commotion and the leash pulling on the front door. She came out to find Prescious had been attacked by an unleashed  PIT BULL and killed in her front yard.

LAFAYETTE IN - AFTER A VICIOUS DOG ATTACK ON DENICE LOVELESS' DAUGHTERS SHE WENT INTO ACTION TO GET CHANGES - STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN CREATED FOR ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS THAT INCLUDE HANDLING DOG ATTACKS

Saturday - July 7, 2012 - News Channel 18 was the first to report the story of the Loveless' children who were injured in a vicious dog attack in May. Those injuries are healing, but Denice Loveless started a petition drive when the owner of the dogs that attacked and bit her 2 daughters wasn't immediately punished.

        "I FELT IGNORED,"  SAID DENICE.

Animal Control Director Lt. Brad Bishop said it should not happen again with a more aggressive approach by animal control officers.  He says that in most cases if a dog bites another animal or a human being dangerous dog agreements are being issued  every single time. But ......

IT'S SOMETHING THAT WASN'T  IMMEDIATELY DONE IN THE LOVELACE' CASE, BUT WAS DONE LATER.

Bishop said standard operating procedures have been created for animal control officers that include a guide for handling dog attacks.  Officers also received training on using a reporting and documentation system that is similar to the one used by the police department.

*****EACH OFFICER NOW HAS A DIGITAL CAMERA TO TAKE PICTURES OF ALL INJURIES AFTER AN ATTACK.*****

Of the 36 reports of dog bites in Lafayette in the first six months of 2012, 16 were taken just in June, or, since the new guidelines were put into effect.

THE ANIMAL CONTROL SUPERVISOR'S JOB DESCRIPTION HAS BEEN REDEFINED.  BISHOP HOPES THE SUPERVISOR CAN NOW SPEND 50 TO 75 PERCENT OF HIS TIME FOLLOWING UP ON DOG ATTACKS.

******THE FOLLOW-UP IS THE BIG THING******

Denice Lovelace says, "That's wonderful.  That's great!  Getting it done and being responsive is a good start.  We have their attention now.  I'm just glad things are being done now."

DAYTON OH - A PIT BULL ATTACKED A WOMAN'S JACK RUSSELL TERRIER AS THEY WERE TAKING A WALK

Friday - July 6, 2012 - Tonulette Armstrong was taking her Jack Russell Terrier for a walk with her to the neighborhood store  on Thursday evening when the PIT BULL came charging out of a house. She attempted to save her dog by reaching down and scooping him up.  She says the "BIG HEADED PIT BULL" tried to knock her down.  It scratched her on the arm and bit her dog on his leg.  She screamed and her husband came running to help her

The Pit was placed in quarantine at the Animal Resource Center by animal control officers since there was a dog bite.  The owner, who has 2 other dogs chained in the yard, will have to go to the center to get the dog.  The owner was given citations for having an unlicensed vicious dog and for control of a vicious dog

THE CITY OF DAYTON STILL HAS A LAW ON THE BOOKS THAT CONSIDERS PIT BULLS TO BE VICIOUS ANIMALS, EVEN THOUGH THE STATE HAS REMOVED THAT DESIGNATION.  DAYTON SGT. PAUL SAUNDERS SAID, "IN OUR MIND, A PIT BULL IS STILL A VICIOUS ANIMAL.  REGARDLESS OF BREED, IF A DOG ATTACKS ANOTHER DOG OR PERSON, THAT IN ITSELF DEFINES IT AS A VIVIOUS ANIMAL."

GILROY CA - GILROY DISPATCH COLUMNIST - LISA PAMPUCH FROM MORGAN HILL WRITES OPINION ABOUT PIT BULLS - IT'S ABOUT PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Posted July 2, 2012 - gilroydispatch.com/opinion/columnist --Lisa Pampuch is a technical editor.  She lives in Morgan Hill CA, with her husband and two children ----This is the 1st part of her article:

WHETHER PIT BULLS OR HEALTH CARE, IT'S ABOUT PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Two Pit Bulls killed a horse in Morgan Hill last month. Let that sink in:  Two dogs that likely weigh between 40 and 70 pounds so severely injured a 1,000-pound horse that it had to be euthanized.

Sadly, pit bull attacks are not unusual.

A few years ago, my daughter was walking our dog when a neighbor's Pit Bull came tearing after them.  The Pit Bull's owner gave chase and caught his dog.  We were very lucky that he was home, noticed that the dog escaped, and able to catch his dog.  I shudder to think what might have happened if circumstances had been even slightly different.  On another occasion, a Pit Bull visiting a neighbor broke through the wood fence between our yards and menaced our 23-pound cockapoo; animal services had to capture the Pit Bull.

A 9-year-old Hollister girl was attacked by a Pit Bull when she walked to her mailbox last month.  Her father was bitten when he tried to save her.  KSBW reports that the girl and her father were lucky:  They only suffered "moderate" injuries.

When Gilroyan Yvonne Hyatt and her dog were attacked by a Pit Bull, they weren't as fortunate.  The dispatch reported that "the Pit Bull came extremely close to biting into a main artery in Hyatt's hand, a scenario that could have proved fatal."   The Pit Bull nearly killed Hyatt's dog and severely injured Hyatt's arm.  Neighbors who rushed to help couldn't deter the Pit bull with broomstick whacks to the dog's head or with punches to the dog's face  The attack continued until someone beat the Pit Bull in the head with a hammer.  Hyatt required 68 stitches and a stay in the intensive care unit.

Two-year-old Morgan Hill resident James Soto's injuries were untreatable:  A Pit Bull mauled him to death.

These are just a few dog attack stories about one dangerous breed from one tiny corner of the world.

DON'T TELL ME THAT TREATING SOME DOG BREEDS DIFFERENTLY THAN OTHERS IS AKIN TO RACISM.  DOG BREEDS HAVE BEEN SPECIFICALLY SELECTED FOR CERTAIN TRAITS THAT MAKE SOME BREEDS MORE LETHAL THAN OTHERS.

DON'T TELL ME THAT IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS ARE THE "REAL" PROBLEM.  JUST AS YOU CANNOT KEEP A BIG CAT LIKE A LION OR TIGER THAT'S CAPABLE OF MAIMING OR KILLING WITHOUT SPECIAL LICENSES AND EXTREME PRECAUTIONS, SO TOO YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO KEEP DOGS THAT CARRY SIMILAR RISK WITHOUT SPECIAL LICENSES AND EXTREME PRECAUTIONS.  PIT BULLS AND ROTTWEILERS ACCOUNTED FOR 73 PERCENT OF FATAL DOG ATTACKS IN THE US FROM 2006 TO 2008.

Let's enact severe restrictions aimed at breds that are capable of inflicting serious injury or death.  Want to own a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler?  You must reduce the dog's aggressive tendencies by spaying or neutering it and by taking owner and dog training; use highly reliable containment systems; and carry large amounts of insurance in case the dog's aggression overcomes these precautions.

Moreover, people who flout these personal responsibility basics ought to lose their dogs and pay severe financial penalties for putting the rest of us at unreasonable risk.

Police were notified of the incident at 7:23 pm on June 27.  Mary E. Dishaw of Greene Street said her 15-year-old cat, TIGGER, was napping under a tree in her backyard when a woman was walking her Pit Bull.

"SHE HAD THE DOG ON A LEASH, BUT SHE JUST LET IT GO.  THE DOG ATTACKED MY CAT AND KILLED HER."

The Pit Bull's owner, Melissa S. LaRose, said she was shocked when her female Pit Bull  took off after the cat and killed it.

April Walker was dropping a friend off at Fifth and Sycamore and had got out of her vehicle with her 3-year-old son, Jacob.  A  PIT BULL  came around the corner and went right between April's legs and took Jacob down to the ground. She began kicking and pulling it by the ears and managed to pull Jacob up and put him on her shoulders.  The dog then leaped in the air and grabbed her son's shirt, leaving marks on his back.  She then kneed the dog in the chest, knocking it back and she ran with her son to her vehicle.

The child required two dozen stitches at Blessing Hospital, including an area around the lip and under the nose that was done by a plastic surgeon.  A search has been conducted for the animal and several Pit Bulls were found in the area but they did not match the description of the animal that attacked Jacob.
