On Monday morning, Rick Layton heard screams coming from the area of Curry Avenue and Harbinger Terrace in Deltona. A pit bull had a grip on a poodle.
"All of a sudden, there's a whole gang of people over there trying to get these dogs apart," he explained. "You know, this thing was locked on to the other dog."
The poodle's owner called 911 and cried, "He just had surgery and the pit bull was hanging on that same area! My poor dog!"
Layton jumped in to help. He said, " I had a hoe, my daughter brought a hoe out, I opened his mouth up. I couldn't believe it. I had to take and pry it's mouth open. it was horrible. There was someone else that came by with a car, and they put the dog that got bit in the car and it was a mess!"
The owner of the poodle was bitten in the finger. She went to the hospital for stitches.
The condition of the poodle or the fate of the pit bull were not immediately known. Deltona Animal Control is investigating.
