BENNETSVILLE SC - A NEIGHBOR'S PIT BULL "SOMEHOW" GOT INTO THE APGAR FAMILY'S YARD AND KILLED THEIR BELOVED PET TERRIER "RICO"
(WBTW) – A family is mourning the loss of their dog after it was attacked by a Pit Bull in their backyard Thursday morning.
Rico was a 3-year-old Terrier. He was given to the Apgar family from a neighbor who once lived across the street.
“It hurt me real bad, but I couldn’t do nothing about it. All I could do was try and get my dog,” Edna Apgar said.
That morning while in the bathroom, Edna looked out of her window, first she noticed a Pit Bull then what it had in its mouth, their dog.
“He was shaking him just like that there. He wasn’t moving. He’d already killed him,” she explained.
Edna’s husband was inside the home during the time of the attack, but he says what happened could’ve been prevented.
“My grandson is even scared to go back here and play now. I think that is why something should be done about this because I think it’s a very dangerous situation,” said Eddie Apgar.
News 13 spoke with the owners of the Pit Bull who were outside. They didn’t want to go on camera, but said the attack was an accident and they don’t know how the Pit Bull got out of its cage and over into the Apgar’s backyard.
The Pit Bull was taken away by Animal Control, but the Apgar family is still missing their little dog.
“He was very friendly and he seemed to know something was wrong with me. He’d sit by my chair an hour, half an hour, I mean you know, all the time he wanted to be by me. He was very special to me,” says Eddie Apgar.
“He was healthy. He ate good. Wasn’t nothing wrong with him til that dog got a hold of him and after he got a hold of him…he died,” Edna Apgar mentioned.
Police issued the owner of the Pit Bull a $100 citation for allowing the dog to run at large off of property owned, rented, or controlled by him.
