The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association released a statement Sunday that said the shelter experienced a tragedy over the weekend.
The release said one of the shelter’s dogs broke out of its cage and viciously attacked another dog. It said multiple employees were present at the time and they attempted to stop the attack, but that attempt failed.
The release from the shelter executive director, Chelsea Staley, said the shelter has equipment to use during this kind of event, but that equipment was not adequate. It said the equipment was not effective and became useless after the dog bent the equipment during the attack.
That release said it eventually became necessary to shoot the dog to get it to release the dog it was attacking.
One of the employees who tried to stop the attack was injured.
“The employees that were involved are heartbroken that the dog had to be killed to end the fight,” the release said.
Rumors started circulating over social media that the killing of the dog was random, but the release went on to say shooting the dog was the last resort.
“Each and every one of our employees is committed to saving the lives of every animal that enters our doors.”
Police have been contacted, and all employees have been cleared of any wrong doing regarding the incident.
Both the victim of the attack and the employee that was injured are recovering.
