NATIONAL PIT BULL VICTIM AWARENESS DAY - OCTOBER 24, 2015 - IN OCTOBER 2009 A FAMILY CAME HOME TO FIND ALL 3 OF THEIR PETS MAULED TO DEATH BY PIT BULLS
Powder Springs GA - On October 4, 2009, A neighbor's pit bulls jumped Bill Katin's fence and when his family came home they found all 3 of their beloved pets mauled to death.
* SANDY - his 16-year-old Golden Retriever
* LEO - his 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier
* GEO - his 5-year-old Chihuahua
The owner of the PIT BULLS, Tommy Bell, 28, waived his right to a jury trial and plead guilty Tuesday morning June 28, 2011, to 3 counts of animal cruelty under the state code for the deaths of Katin's 3 pets -- in Cobb County State Court. Prosecutor Melissa Rife said:
THE STATE CHARGES, WHICH BELL PLEADED GUILTY TO, ARE STIFFER THAN THE COUNTY ORDINANCE. FOR INSTANCE, THE CRUELTY TO ANIMALS CHARGE UNDER THE COUNTY ORDINANCE BRINGS A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF 60 DAYS JAIL WITH A $1,000 FINE, COMPARED TO VIOLATION UNDER STATE CODE, WHICH CARRIES A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF ----12 MONTHS IN JAIL WITH $1,000 FINE.
Bill Katin told Tommy Bell in court that his punishment will eventually go away, but his family's loss will never go away. Bell remarked that he thought his punishment was technically unfair. Judge Glover took issue with Bell's statement saying:
"I DON'T REALLY CARE HOW UNFAIR YOU THINK IT IS...THIS ATTACK COULD HAVE BEEN ON A PERSON...A HUMAN BEING."
* HE IS ORDERED TO HAVE NO CONTACT WITH THE KATINS
* HE IS TO SPEND 3 YEARS ON PROBATION
* HE IS BARRED FROM OWNING ANY ANIMALS
* HE MUST PERFORM 80 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
^ HE MUST PAY $1,700 IN RESTITUTION
