NEWPORT NEWS VA - POLICE RESPONDED TO A CALL ABOUT 2 FEMALES INVOLVED IN AN ARGUMENT - ON ARRIVING 1 OF THE FEMALES OPENED A FRONT DOOR AND A PIT BULL LUNGED AT AN OFFICER WHO WAS FORCED TO SHOOT IT

(WVEC) -- A dog was shot Sunday by a Newport News police officer after it reportedly lunged at the officer.
According to a news release, their emergency dispatch received a call at around 12:40 p.m. regarding an argument between two females at a residence in the 700 block of 31st Street. When an officer arrived at that location, the two females were outside the residence.
Police said that one of the women advised the officer that there was a dog inside the residence and then opened the front door. They said the dog lunged toward the officer, and the officer then shot the dog with his duty weapon.
The dog, which they said is a PIT BULL,  is currently alive and in the custody of animal control, according to police.
They said the investigation is continuing.
