EDGEWATER FL - A PIT BULL ATTACKED A TODDLER AND FOUR ADULTS WERE INJURED AS THEY TRIED TO RESCUE THE CHILD
A 4-year-old girl who was attacked by a PIT BULL is in the hospital with 3 fractured bones and her family isn't sure she'll be able to get out in time to be home for Christmas. The little girl was attacked when she and an adult woman were trying to feed the dog Sunday morning. Neither were identified by authorities.
The 4-year-old victim was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday. The girl, the woman, three other adults who were trying to help and a second dog were injured by the pit bull, authorities said.
The conditions of the adults involved, and the second dog, were not immediately available but were not reported to be severe.
The woman was at the house of a friend feeding the dog while she was away. She took the girl with her because she was babysitting her.
The girl’s babysitter said the child did nothing to provoke the animal.
"It was terrible. It was awful because these are my friends, and the babies, they're like my own kids," said neighbor Janet Grupe.
When the dog attacked, neighbors ran to help and were attacked in turn.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they had to use hoses and a fire extinguisher to keep the dog at bay.
The dog was taken to Edgewater Animal Shelter and put under quarantine.
No one has been able to get in touch with the dog’s owner, who is traveling out of state, authorities said.
