A young girl is recovering at Children's Hospital after being mauled by a dog in Amherst.  Police say
the attack happened last Thursday afternoon. Family members of the victim say a 10-year-old girl was attacked outside an apartment by a pit bull.

The incident happened on Harlem Road in Amherst.  Police say the dog ran outside and bit the girl in the face.  Family of the victim say the girl suffered injuries to her scalp and needed surgery and that she's been receiving medical treatment since the attack.

One question going forward is whether this dog will be labeled a dangerous dog.  Amherst Police say they've submitted paperwork to a judge requesting a hearing on this matter. A judge would have to make a final determination on the dog.  It's still unclear what triggered the PIT BULL. For now the dog is being held by the Town of Clarence animal control as the issue of what to do next is handled in court.

The victim's mother declined comment to 2 On Your Side. A woman who identified herself as the owner of the dog decline comment to 2 On Your Side Monday.

Pit bulls are like guns, they have triggers.

Again, what more can the dog do to convince people that it's dangerous? It put a human in the hospital requiring surgery. It doesn't matter why it attacked. I don't care if the little girl was poking it with a stick. This kind of over-reaction cannot be tolerated. The dog gets a hearing as if it can be either guilty or innocent. It's neither. It's dangerous.

Since when do pit bulls have rights? Who are we offending by eliminating threatening pit bulls? Are we that politically correct that we cannot afford to do away with pit bulls because it would be detrimental to society?

COME ON AMERICA!
