A 58-year-old woman who was mauled by dogs in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday is currently recovering after surgery. Her dog, Zac, who was also wounded in the attack, was taken to a local vet and went into surgery on Tuesday, Highway Mail reported.
It is alleged the woman let her dog out into the garden at 7.30am on Monday and went back inside her house. A short while later, she heard a noise and rushed out of the house where she saw two large dogs in the garden – A PIT BULL AND A BOERBOEL – attacking the seven-year-old Zac.
The woman reportedly rushed in to try and help her dog and said she either tripped or was knocked over. The two dogs attacked the woman on the ground. She escaped the mauling covered in blood.
The woman’s mother grabbed a broom and they ran back to try and save the dog. The mother said the big dogs then turned on them as they neared their pet. The victim’s father rushed to open the front gate and the two dogs ran out of the yard and started attacking another dog across the road. He then called the paramedics.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Glenda Mathe confirmed the incident, saying the woman was trying to protect her dog from being bitten by the two dogs when she was attacked.
Mathe added paramedics stabilised her at the scene and she was taken to a nearby hospital.
