THREE PIT BULLS have been euthanized after being involved in a Monday morning attack that killed two smaller dogs and injured an 87-year-old man.
Steve VenHuizen, chief deputy for the Rock Island County Sheriff's Office, said the man was bit on the hand by one of the pit bulls while trying to break up the dog fight. After the incident, the pit bulls' owner agreed to relinquish ownership and have the dogs euthanized.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies was called around 9:45 a.m. Monday to the 3900 block of 14th Street in Moline. The pit bulls had been in a fenced-in yard but slipped through a gate that was secured by a bungee strap, Capt. VenHuizen said, adding the attack occurred when two Chinese crested dogs were let outside in a neighboring yard of a residence where the elderly man lived.
At the scene, the man received medical attention from the Moline Fire Department for the dog bite, Capt. VenHuizen said, and later sought further treatment at a local hospital. Capt. VenHuizen said Moline Animal Control collected the pit bulls at the request of their owner.
"She voluntarily gave the pit bulls up," he said.
Investigators are still trying to determine what "sparked" the attack, Capt. VenHuizen said, adding authorities will consider "the totality of everything" in determining if any ordinance was violated or charges should be filed.
