Police say a 3-year-old girl was taken to Lowell General Hospital after she was bitten near her ear by an AMERICAN BULLDOG while playing in her neighbor's yard on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to Redgate Road about 5:30 p.m., and found the girl suffering from a bite near her ear, according to Police Chief Timothy Sheehan.
Sheehan said the girl is from 40 Redgate Road, and that the bite occurred across the street at 25 Redgate Road as the girl and several other children were playing in the yard with the dog during a family barbecue.
First-responders initially requested a MedFlight helicopter to fly the girl to a Boston trauma center, but the request was canceled when it was determined that the girl's injuries were not as bad as feared.
Sheehan said the girl was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Animal Control responded and determined the American Bulldog had all its shots, according to Sheehan. The dog was still placed in quarantine for 10 days as a precaution, he said.
No charges were filed.
No one answered the door at 40 Redgate Road on Saturday evening. A man in the yard at 25 Redgate Road declined to comment.
A neighbor said the family at 25 Redgate Road has had the American Bulldog since it was a puppy, and that the dog has never caused any trouble that she knows of. She said the family also recently got a new dog as well.
