A 4-year-old girl was airlifted to a local hospital Monday after a PIT BULL attack near Burgaw left her with multiple injuries, including several puncture wounds, according to the supervisor for Pender County Animal Control. The attack happened about 12:48 p.m. off Piney Woods Road, about 5 miles outside of Burgaw. Animal Control Supervisor Stephen Throneburg said the girl appeared to have suffered multiple bites and other injuries. "We don't have a whole lot of information because they were being rushed off to the hospital," Throneburg said. The girl was visiting the area when she was attacked by the pit bull, which was tied up on a chain, Throneburg said. She was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Officers contacted the pit bull's owner and had the dog in custody Monday afternoon. The animal will be isolated and confined for 10 days before it is evaluated. The dog was restrained per county ordinance, so it was unclear whether charges would be filed against the owner.
