She thought she was going to die. That is how Theresa Key described her harrowing walk to work.
Key said she was walking through Jackson Ward, near 1st and Duval Street, Sunday morning when two dogs — Italian Mastiffs, according to police — attacked the Omni hotel housekeeper.
The injuries left the 58-year-old Richmond mother disfigured, according to her daughter Marcaelle.
Key’s scalp was ripped off the back of her head. She was also injured on her arms, legs, back and ears.
“A man saw the dogs attacking my mother, but he was too scared to get out of his car,” Marcaelle said. “He blew his horn, but the dogs would not leave.”
When police arrived, an officer distracted the dogs long enough to end the attack. When the dogs — described by police as “large” — became aggressive toward the officer, the officer fired two rounds — killing one of the dogs.
The second dog was captured and handed over to animal control. Richmond Police said they were still working to determine who owned the dogs. Anyone with information can call Richmond Police.
“Please help us find the dog owners. They are responsible for their dogs’ behavior. Those dogs should’ve been locked up,” Marcaelle said.
Theresa Key is scheduled to undergo plastic surgery on Tuesday, her daughter said.

I don't see that happening, the owners coming forward to take responsibility...

Marcaelle still believes that our system and its laws will penalize the owners of PIT BULL TYPE DOGS -- the 'cane Corso' is just another pit bull + mastiff mix -- when their monsters hurt or kill someone. She has a lot to learn and a big disillusionment coming. After all, most of the time these pit / pit mix owners walk away laughing even after their pit bull types have killed someone.

Worse yet, even the mauling / killing animals get to just go back home. The 'humane' societies we've foolishly handed animal control over to is only interested in keeping mauler / killer pit bull types on our streets. They will most likely test the pit bull + mastiff mix that survived mauling Marcaelle's mother, then find that the 'poor thing' isn't aggressive at all. If they can't find the owner, they'll advertise it to the public as an ideal family pet, calling it some other breed (eg, pointer) and hiding the fact that it mauled an adult human being.

We need to take animal control out of the hands of 'humane' societies. Their declared goal is NOT public safety, but the care for animals. They have no expertise whatsoever regarding public safety and no obligation to guard that.

This is also why police should never hesitate to shoot all pit bull types involved in a mauling on the scene. Killing them then and there is the only way to circumvent this perverted 'humane' society practice of returning [wannabe] killers to our neighborhoods.

I hope Theresa Key recovers from her injuries without permanent physical disability. Sadly, I know she will never recover from the emotional injury. No victim of a pit bull / pit bull mix attack ever really does.

If this second pit mix isn't put down, that will be adding insult to injury. Ditto if the owner is found but not jailed for many years.

The same breed of dog attacked and killed a woman in an apartment hallway in California years ago. They are powerful dogs and should be walked and housed accordingly.
