According to a police report, Joanna Brewer, 42, told police she was walking home when she observed two pit bulls running around. One of the dogs approached and bit her on the thigh.
She screamed for help and when Albert Macdade, 74, came outside, the same pit bull knocked him to the ground, causing head and back injuries.
Macdade told police he drew a concealed weapon and opened fire on the dog, striking it once. Both dogs ran off. Police made contact with the owner, Ryan Williams, who told officers he put his dogs in the backyard. When he came out, he found his dogs loose and one shot.
Williams said his gates were secure and he had no idea how they got out.
The dogs were found to be not current on their rabies vaccinations, the police report said.
Authorities classified the pit bull as vicious due to the bite. It will have surgery for the gunshot wound and be placed into quarantine, Fort Smith police said.
Officers issued Williams a citation for dogs running at large and keeping unvaccinated dogs. They also issued him a vicious dog classification form along with a vicious dog order of compliance form, the police report said.
