A man faces three felony charges and a 70-year-old woman is recovering from serious injuries after a brutal dog attack this week in Caroline County.
According to the Caroline Sheriff's Office, the woman was watering flowers Tuesday morning at her home near CCC Road in the Ladysmith area when the dogs attacked her. The woman, a well-known figure in the community who works at Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant in Ladysmith, spent three days in the hospital but is now back home with family, said Caroline Sheriff's Lt. Julie Heffler.
The dogs— A PIT BULL, BOXER AND A BOXER MIX — were deemed vicious, seized by animal control that day and euthanized. Rabies tests came back negative.
The owner of the dogs, John Satterwhite, has been charged with three felony counts of owning vicious dogs.
"We've had dealings with him in the past about his dogs running loose but never biting anyone," said Heffler.
She said the dogs got loose on Tuesday, crossed the road and attacked the woman. Her pre-teen grandsons who were visiting heard screams and came out and scared off the dogs, Heffler said.
"It was very traumatic for them," she said.
Sheriff Tony Lippa praised the animal control officers for responding quickly to the attack scene.
