A 3-year-old girl was flown to a trauma center after she was bitten by a PIT BULL about 3 p.m. Sunday in the borough.
Mahanoy City police said the child was bitten once on the head and face, causing deep lacerations. She was treated at the scene by Mahanoy City EMS and Shenandoah ALS and taken to the Shenandoah helipad.
The girl was placed on board a MedEvac helicopter and flown to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for further treatment.
Police said the incident occurred on South A Street, between Mahanoy Avenue and South Street. Police said several people were sitting on a sidewalk with the dog while the 3-year-old was there playing.
The child was trying to play with the dog, but the animal began to growl, at which time an adult told the girl to stop. The child apparently got close to the dog again when the animal snapped at her, biting her in the head, police said.
Police said they that they do not expect charges to be filed against the dog’s owner but the investigation is ongoing. However, police said a state dog warden will be contacted to determine whether or not the animal should be classified as a “dangerous” dog.
