HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC - LETTER TO THE EDITOR: "BE PROACTIVE ABOUT DOGS ON BEACH"

http://www.islandpacket.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article98680017.html

"I read with interest your recent article regarding dogs on the beach. I may be wrong, but the dog running free appeared to be a pit bull or mix so I called the Beaufort County Sheriff’s office and Hilton Head town government. There are no breed-specific restrictions that require a pit bull, Rottweiler, or other dog capable of killing a human or animal to be leashed prior to 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. Such dogs are free to run on the beach during those hours.
We are retired and enjoy breakfast or dinner at the beach. We often see dogs playfully running free but fortunately, never an attack dog. If one were unleashed, we would leave. This falls under the category of common sense; and please, let’s not insult anyone and talk about voice commands. Pit bulls killed 34 people last year. Many were children killed by the family pet. If one attacks, we are defenseless.
I find it illogical and dangerous that dogs banned in more than 900 U.S. towns and cities, more than 30 countries, and U.S. military bases including those in Beaufort County, can run free on a Hilton Head beach that promotes itself as family-oriented. I suggest the town review this policy before a tragedy makes national headlines.
I welcome comments from those who make such policy."
