Denton police said one of its officers was taken to the hospital following a dog attack that left him both bitten and shot.
The incident happened Thursday during a welfare check call on Hill Top Lane, police said. Officer Geelen was treated for non life-threatening injuries at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Police said the dog came out of the home after the subject of the welfare check opened the door. The dog lunged at Geelen and bit him three times, police said.
During the attack, Geelen started shooting at the dog, police said. While shooting, the dog hit the officer's arm, which moved it into the line of fire, police said. The officer then ended up wounding his arm, police said.
The dog ultimately was killed by the officer, police said.
