CHILLICOTHE OH - A GERMAN SHEPHERD ATTACKED A 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT HER BROTHER'S FOOTBALL GAME - THE CHILD HAS SEVERE FACIAL INJURIES
Zach Lawhorn said his seven-year-old daughter Carter is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a GERMAN SHEPHERD Sunday.
He said it started when the girl asked a man who brought the dog to her brother's football game at Miami Trace High School in Washington Court House if she could pet it. Moments later, loved ones say the dog had the girl pinned to the ground as it attacked her.
They said the girl suffered massive facial injuries, including a broken nose, along with cuts and bruises.
"All the doctors said the same thing, 'she was within inches of dying'" Zach Lawhorn said Monday night.
He said the girl was rushed to Nationwide Children's Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. The Fayette County Sheriff's office says the Charleston, West Virginia, man who brought the dog to the game may face charges in the case, and that the dog that attacked the child is believed to have already been put down.
Even after the girl was attacked, she wasn't worried about herself.
"Carter mentioned 'I'm so glad it wasn't one of my little friends that got hurt.' She was thinking of them," said Charity Long, the victim's great-grandmother.
The family said they're hoping the girl regains full use of her eyesight and will most likely undergo more surgeries. They hope no other family has to go through their pain.
"Hopefully, this never happens to anyone else, especially going to watch your kid play ball" Lawhorn said.
