PURLEAR, WILKES COUNTY NC - A FAMILY PIT BULL DOG ATTACKED THEIR 2-YEAR-OLD BOY CAUSING LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES

A 2-year-old Wilkes County boy remained in critical condition at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem Monday morning as a result of being attacked by his family’s  PIT BULL  dog on Sunday, said Chief Deputy David Carson of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office.
Carson said the Wilkes Communications Center received a 911 call at 12:20 p.m. Sunday stating that a child had been attacked by a pit bull. The incident occurred at the child’s home on Reedy Branch Road in the Purlear community.
He said the child received life-threatening neck and head injuries. The incident started on the porch of the home and then was in the yard, he added.
Carson said adults were nearby when the incident occurred and a family member euthanized the dog with a gun after the attack occurred.
The animal is in custody of Wilkes County Animal Control and will be tested for disease at a state lab, said Carson.
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services Director Eric Morrison said family members brought the victim to the Champion Fire Station and Wilkes EMS then transported the child to Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro for additional treatment.
Morrison said a Baptist AirCare helicopter flew the child from WRMC to Brenner.
The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office and the Wilkes County Animal Control Department are investigating this incident.

Carson said names of the victim, family members or others present when the incident occurred haven’t been released yet because investigators haven’t yet conducted interviews.
He said more information will be shared as it becomes available.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim, his family and all of the emergency personnel who have assisted and continue to care for the victim,” Carson added.
