SUMTER COUNTY SC - A "PET ROTTWEILER" GOT OUT OF A GATE AND ATTACKED A 6-YEAR-OLD BOY PLAYING WITH OTHER CHILDREN - HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO COLUMBIA HOSPITAL WITH HEAD INJURIES

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A 6-year-old child was flown by helicopter to a Columbia hospital after being bitten by a dog in Sumter Sunday.  It happened Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m. on Grange Road off U.S. Highway 15 South.

Ken Bell, a spokesperson for the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, says a group of kids were playing when a ROTTWEILER  attacked the boy. Bell says the dog is a pet and deputies believe one of the children did not lock the gate and the dog escaped.

Bell says the child was bit in the head and on one of the ears. The child was airlifted to a Columbia hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Bell said criminal charges are unlikely since there was not ill-will or intent in this case but the investigation is still open and active.
