MARION, MCDOWELL COUNTY NC - 2 SMALL GIRLS WERE IN A YARD WHEN A NEIGHBOR HEARD THEM SCREAMING AND REALIZED A LARGE DOG WAS MAULING THE 2-YEAR-OLD - HERO: WAYNE ELLIOT ALSO SAW THE ATTACK AND SPRINTED ACROSS A BUSY ROAD AND DOWN A STEEP TERRAIN TO PULL THE DOG OFF HER

It was typical afternoon in Marion, but then screams broke out in one backyard, so did the cries for help.
"I heard kids playing, dogs growling, barking. It sounded normal at first, but then I could hear the kids screaming help me," neighbor Daphne Burleson said.
Two little girls got too close to a chained up dog in the backyard of a family member. The 2-year-old, Ashlynn Cash, was attacked while the 4-year-old cried for help. No one at the home was outside.
"I could see the little girl's head and I could see the dog, but I couldn't see where he was latched on, but I could tell she was being mauled," Burleson said.
Another neighbor, Wayne Elliot, saw the ordeal and sprinted across a busy road, over steep terrain, to pull the girl to safety.
"He said it had her when he had to pull the dog off of her. It had clamped down on her," Burleson continued.
Family members came out of the house shortly after, with EMS arriving minutes later.
The girl was taken to McDowell County Hospital with serious injuries. A family member said she is home but is still recovering. The 4-year-old was unharmed.
The dog was not current on its shots and will have to finish a mandatory 10 day quarantine for rabies. The status of the dog following the quarantine is unknown.
News 13 reached out to Elliot, but he has not returned our phone calls.
When the McDowell County Sheriff's office was asked if any child endangerment charges would be filed, they said they were not aware of any at this time.

Why is pitty chained up in the backyard? Not much of a house dog, eh?

I cannot believe parents would let their 2-year-old and 4-year-old anywhere near a chained up pit bull. I mean, nanny dog of course.
