(WNCN) - A Transylvania County deputy is in the hospital after he was seriously injured in a dog attack while responding to a call Monday afternoon, officials said.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the deputy was responding to a disturbance call at a home on East Fork Road near Brevard just before 5 p.m. when he was attacked.
During the attack, the deputy fired a shot from his handgun at the "violent animal" and was grazed in the hand by the bullet, the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
However, the deputy was also attacked by the dog, which caused the majority of his injuries, officials said.
The deputy was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville with serious but non life-threatening injuries.
The deputy is expected to undergo emergency surgery for his injuries.
WHNS reported the dog was a PIT BULL and died from the shooting from the deputy.
