UPDATE: THE DOG MAY BE A PIT BULL/GERMAN SHEPHERD MIX
A Bulloch County child was hospitalized Saturday after being bitten in the face by a relative's dog.
The mom's post about the wounds went viral on social media.
It happened on Hendrix Circle just outside of Statesboro. The child left the hospital Monday after having surgery over the weekend. Her mother, April Elliott, posted pictures just after her 22-month-old daughter Evie was bitten. They rushed her to a local emergency room, then to Savannah for treatment and surgery.
County leaders say the hospital notified animal control and one of their investigators went to the home over the weekend to question the dog's owner. They went back Monday and the owner forfeited the dog to county custody.
"Animal control must be notified in all bite cases to investigate whether there is a proper rabies vaccination or not," said Ted Wynn, Bulloch County Public Safety Director.
The mother says cosmetic surgery will help Evie heal with less scarring, but they won't know for a while.
Neither the child's mother or the dog's owner wanted to speak on camera. They are heartbroken over what they're both describing as a freak accident. According to county investigators, they're still looking into the case but they don't anticipate any charges filed.
They say the child will have to undergo more surgery.
A young Statesboro child is undergoing plastic surgery to her face after a dog attacked her on Saturday afternoon.
The girl is receiving treatment to close her gaping wounds as doctors work to keep scarring at a minimum.
