2-year-old mauled by grandfather's dog

(3TV/CBS 5) -- A toddler is recovering after being mauled by a dog at a home in west Phoenix.

According to Phoenix police, at around 6:30 p.m on Tuesday, a woman and her 2-year-old daughter were at their home near 35th Avenue and Indian School Road with several others.
The girl's mother told Arizona's Family that her daughter, Aria, was in surgery most of the night and has a long road ahead of her, including more operations. She is, however, expected to survive.
Police say after the mother picked up Aria, a dog, described as a  PIT BULL, jumped up and snatched the child from the mother’s arms. Police say the dog then started to maul the girl.
"Pray for her mom because it’s horrible," a family friend told Arizona's Family. "My friend just lost her dog, who she was totally devoted to, and I don’t know even know what to say about the granddaughter. Aria is a beautiful little girl, and I hope this doesn’t affect the rest of her life, which it’s gonna."
According to the friend, Aria and her mom live with her grandfather. The dog was his. The friend said the dog was usually well-behaved and that this behavior was "out of character" for it.
"I was just talking to the owner -- the owner of the dog -- and he’s pretty broken up about it, especially since it’s his granddaughter it happened to," the friend said.
Someone inside the house eventually shot and killed the dog, but the family would not tell police who did it and no gun was recovered from the home. The girl was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, police said.
The other people inside the home at the time left and reportedly never returned.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses.

It's so sad to see another child's face rearranged by a worthless pit bull. A pit bull that was inhumanely killed on top of it. Like that magically changes what happened to the little girl.

I swear, Breed Specific Legislation would prevent these attacks, but pit bull advocates call us haters for trying to keep innocent children safe. Yes, I am a hater of pit bulls. I hate what pit bulls do. SUE ME!

I'm sick of the righteous pit bull advocates acting like they have a worthy cause.
